I have a question about the protests.  Over here (USA) 15 thousand a year for University is cheap!!  So, why all the uproar?

I have a question about the protests.  Over here (USA) 15 thousand a year for University is cheap!!  So, why all the uproar?
When I was at uni (1992 - 1997) we didn't have to part-pay our tuition at all; it was completely funded.  On top of that I also received a grant every year which covered my rent, my living expenses and my social life.  Not everybody received a grant; it was means-tested.  Whilst I was at uni it started changing ... grants began to be replaced by Student Loans and more recently students had to start paying towards their own tuition fees and from 2012 this is going up to 9,000 pounds a year.

This means that a lot of them will leave university thousands of pounds in debt (estimates vary, but go up to about 40 - 50 thousand) and will spend a lot of their future income paying back their debts over many years.  They're not happy about it.

Compared to America it probably is cheap but because it hasn't been the norm here there's been little opportunity to save up for a more debt free university experience and it's the debt issue that's causing the uproar.  The argument that education should (still) be free (a right rather than a privilege) has also cropped up.

Hope that helps!

 ;D
