My home country Barbados is in a festive mood today. We are celebrating our Forty-Fourth year of Independence from Britain. However, our Queen is still Elizabeth.
This is been a hard year for the country.
First of all was a very sad incident that sent the country into mourning. Some young men robbed a little store and as they ran, they threw a molotov cocktail behind them. This was a little store with no back door. Some young ladies ran to the back and died of smoke inhalation - 6 of them.
Then one Saturday morning, we woke up to the news that our Prime Minister was dead at 48, of pancreatic cancer.
The following Saturday morning, Hurricane Tomas gave us a visit, thankfully with no loss of life, but a bit of damage.
But today will be a day of thankfulness, in the midst of our sorrow and mourning.
Over here in the British Virgin Islands where I live, the Barbadian society had a church service on Sunday. At the end I did a presentation, reading a little comic passage. ['Bajan' is the nickname for Barbadians. It rhymes with 'Cajun']
