Dialysis patients put art on show
Patients who have to spend hours undergoing dialysis have an alternative to daytime TV to fill the time.
Artist Jan Gardner who has held sessions with them as they undergo their treatment at Glan Clwyd Hospital, Rhyl, Denbighshire.
Now the work they have produced has gone on display in an exhibition at Rhuddlan Library.
Kidney dialysis patient Caz Hughes said: "We all absolutely love it and don't know what we'd do without Jan."
Ms Hughes was initially reluctant to take part.
"I said 'Don't ask me, I can't draw,'" she said.
"But once Jan starts she makes everything so interesting.
"She's so patient and enthusiastic she builds it up inside of you. We look forward to her coming in."
Ms Hughes has been receiving dialysis for nine years and has three-and-a-half hour sessions three times a week.
"Once you're on the machine it's sheer boredom sitting there for hours," she said.
"But one day a week when we have our art session the morning just flies by."
Transplant specialist nurse Dawn Oliver, who works on the renal and diabetes unit at the hospital, said: "The patients have said to me that it helps to pass the time and gives them something to focus on.
"They never expected to be able to achieve some of the art that they have produced."
Ms Hughes, who has six pictures in the exhibition, said: "When Jan suggested an exhibition we just laughed but she said no, people should see what you've achieved, because of course we can only use one hand."
The exhibition at Rhuddlan Library runs until 8 January.
