Title: What will you be doing this festive season and with whom?
Post by: Des on November 23, 2010, 01:51:06 AM
Well,

We here in South Africa it is the middle of summer so NO snow, NO warm puds, NO sitting by the fire and NO "dashing through the snow in a one horse open slay" and all that jazz.

We eat cold meats and salads, platters of it with all different types shapes and sizes. We eat the whole day long.......
For pud we eat fruitcake or trifle (cold puds)fridge tarts (each of the ladies have their speciality)
We string lights up in any old trea in the yard or get a wooden more modern creation (African) with only a few decorations. We are not big on sending out cards at all but we SMS every single number on your phone (the networks jam up)  Very few people decorate their houses with lights and ornamants .
Family and friends are a must.
So the whole day is spent eating drinking and being mary (or John after a few drinks  :rofl;) swimming, going to the beach or the nearest park or holiday resort. Don't forget the watermelon fight. They say it is good for your hair heheheheh :rofl;

This is really something to look forward too. We will be spending the day with my hubby's brother in Jeffrey's Bay ( a 2 day drive)

 :yahoo; :bandance; :cheer:

so - what will you be doing?  :beer1;

What's "pud?"

I invited a neighbor over for a non-traditional Thanksgiving lunch on Thursday. Neither of us like crowds / big gatherings and we don't live near our families, so it'll be perfect for us. My neighbor is vegetarian and I'm not sure yet what the whole meal will be. I know I'm going to make squash soup and Rebecca said she'll provide wine and peppermint ice cream with chocolate syrup. Maybe we don't need anything else!

I did buy a turkey, but my plan is to cut it up to make turkey jerky for dog treats. I'll cook the bones down to make a pot of soup.

Christmas will probably be spent sitting in front of the TV or working on home remodeling projects. I only have one day off work for Christmas.

Oh it sounds lookit's going to be such a good time at your house.  Can I come. For turkey day i will have my 18 year old daughter make a corn casserole. A dish she had but I never have. Plus I'm slightly impressed (and suprised) she wants to make it lol. my brother will be spending a few days. The day after the town tree lighting starts and the huge tree is only one block over. Beautiful light wreaths are al up the street on street lights which like old fashioned street gas lamps. A chours sings when the tree is light. It's an older group and they dress in colonal costumes from the era our town was from. It's 325 years old. They were the big hats lol. Then sat afternoon is the town parade and it's a ton of fun. It's supposed to be cold but I'm going to bundle up. I really need to get out and do somethig fun. I was a little bummed thinking of the holidays but I've decided I am going to make the best of them. How can I not with all the fun activity going on around me. Did you say "watermelon" fight? lol.

What's "pud"???

I'll be dashing through the SNOW in a one horse HONDA trying to get out to my friend Dean's parents for Thanksgiving.  I hope my Horse starts!

I'm taking a cucumber salad and some of those ham roll ups with the cream cheese and a pickle.  Yummy good.

I have 3 full days without dialysis so I will have to be very careful.  darn!

{PUD} short for pudding - dessert - something sweet to eat after a meal.  :) sorry : I sometimes forget about the language barriers.

Watermelon fight is the funniest thing ever. You wear swimming trunks and run around like mad trying to rub it in each other's hair. This is a very  sticky afair.   :pics;

I am kinda slow so I am usualy the looser. It is great fun.

TS you are more than welcome !!!

Because it is our summer holiday the festivities goes on for 4days.

ps we don't celebrate thanksgiving and we don't cook turkey.

Will spend Boxing Day watching the cricket. As usual, Australia will cream the Poms and win back the Ashes. This probably needs translating to our American friends.

Ack, you can have them (I don't *get* cricket despite having to watch it often when at my grandad's house as a youngster.)

Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday...and this year was definitely in my top 5.
I went home to my parents' on Wednesday and went with my mom to church, so I saw a bunch of people that are like family to me whom I rarely see. Thursday we all went to my grandmother's and then to my mamaw's, where I must admit I cheated quite a bit on my diet...  :secret; but ssshhh, don't tell ;)

I came back home Thursday evening just before my boyfriend walked in the door, back to visit for a few days from school. And I've mentioned it in almost every post since then, but that nigt he proposed to me, quickly skyrocketing this holiday to the top of the list :D

I will have to work on Christmas Eve and Christmas, but I'll exchange gifts and have time with my family a week or so earlier at my sister's college graduation. I'm hoping to get to go to Phoenix for New Years (if I can get off work) to be with my FIANCE (I so love that word!)

I hope all of you have wonderful, beautiful holidays!!!

My parents are coming to visit for Christmas. They'll be here for about three weeks. I'm both looking forward to it and having anxiety attacks over it.

My niece and nephew are coming for Christmas and New Year's again this year.  They arrive on the 20th and will stay for 2 weeks.  We'll be doing our usual round of gourmet restaurants, as well as cooking at home including cookies, and Christmas dinner will be a very festive and fancy brunch at the club my mil belongs to.  We'll also go to the cottage for some snowy activities, cross-country skiing, tobogganing and trying out the new kick-ski we just got.  Hoping to take them to a theatrical performance, possibly Pricilla, Queen of the Desert now playing here in Toronto, or A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.  We'll cut our own Christmas tree with the sleigh ride and hot chocolate out to the field of trees up north and hopefully spend New Year's Eve with the same crazy, lovely bunch of mostly South American and Mexican friends as we did last year.  Lee will provide fireworks in the park beside their house.  I only wish that the kids parents were coming too but alas not.  They have to run the vet clinic and don't have enough time off since all the vets need holidays.

I've no idea what we're doing this year. We're usually just at home.  Last year, Dad came up for the day, so I imagine he'll do that again this year.  We try to pop over to Nova Scotia to see my grandparents before the ferries tie up for the winter.  My parents have an odd relationship.  They've been separated for over a year now, but Dad is still here at least 2-3 times a month.  I gave up trying to figure them out.. *L*

We are supposed to have my husband's kids every other Christmas, but they've never wanted to come and we've never wanted to engage in any fight about it, so my son comes over from London to spend Christmas with us each year.  However, last year he was unable to come at the last minute, so we were pretty much on our own.  I wasn't feeling well, so I didn't want to cook a big meal.  We threw tradition to the wind and went out and had a curry at this great Indian restaurant, and to our surprise, there were a lot of people there who had the same idea.  After we had our Christmas curry, we went snowshoeing at the Arboretum and had a really lovely day.

So this year, my son is again coming over, and I asked him what he wanted for Christmas dinner.  I told him about our Christmas curry last year (my son loves curry), and he thought that was a brilliant idea and asked if we could do that this year.  So that's what we are doing.  Two years in a row I don't have to make Christmas dinner.  I just don't feel up to it.  I don't even have a tree yet and I probably won't get one because it is so incredibly cold and is only going to get colder, and this year I just don't seem to be coping with the cold very well.

This year has been difficult, and I have to admit that Christmas has arrived sooner than I expected.  I'm just not ready and can't really get into the spirit.  Thanksgiving and Christmas are supposed to be about family, and mine is either dead or very far away while my husband's is just mean.

If my son ever is able to get a job and isn't available for Christmas, I'm going to ditch the whole thing and volunteer to serve Christmas dinner at the local homeless shelter or something along those lines.  I've always wanted to do that, but there have always been other people who have expected me to do something else.

I've always fancied doing something like that.  I really must do so one year.  I shall put it on my Bucket List.

I actually rescheduled my labs/neph appt for that very reason...I didn't think my Thanksgiving feasting would earn me a pat on the pat on the back phosphorically...

Christmas this year is going to be wonderful! Our daughter, her husband and their baby moved home in September, they are no longer cross country! We will get the pleasure of spending the day with them and enjoying the baby's first Christmas.

I just can't wait!!!   :yahoo;
