Hubby just asked me if he's going to be doing D 6 days a week, is that going to cause him to stop peeing sooner than the 3 day a week treatments? Wondering myself about that. He's hoping not of course, and something i hadnt questioned.. thanks

How much you pee is really more dependent on your particular kidney function, not how often you dialyze. You pee as much as your kidney is capable of peeing. Some people are on D for years and never stop. Others lose that particular part of kidney function much sooner than others. I've heard a few random theories that starting D makes your kidneys "lazy" so they stop working sooner, but I think it's junk science.

Well, I think it is not a case of stopping but that the machine does it for him. So I would say the longer the machine does it the less he will have to.
I do D 3 times a week and I pee less than before dialysis but then again - maybe that was the reason for me starting dialysis.

Here's an unscientific anecdote: after a week on in-center hemo my peeing was completely wiped out. I switched to short daily and when I did a 24-hour collection I was down to less than 200mL per day. Now after 2 weeks on nocturnal I am peeing like a racehorse again - only twice a day, but peeing just like I used to before I started D. From what I can gather this isn't uncommon for nocturnal patients. If it keeps on I'm going to ask for another 24-hour collection, just for curiosity's sake.

After starting D my pee output slowed down a little but after 4 years it stopped completely. Now when I feel that my bladder feels full I pee about 2 ounces.

Its not really how much he is peeing, its the quality of the kidneys filtering that matters. Depending on the underlying reason your kidneys fail, you can still pee, but not remove toxins from the blood. This is why you may be started on dialysis even though you are peeing a normal amount. Its not the amount, its the quality of filtration of the kidneys. Eventually as the kidney function fails, you will stop peeing.
6 days a week is the way to go. You will feel much better as your blood will be filtered more often.

According to my dialysis nurse going to 5 or 6 times a week will extend kidney function as you are healthier.

Ultimately, it comes down to the reason your kidneys failed in the first place. If you have a condition that affects the kidneys, just because you do dialysis does not mean your kidneys will regain function.
Just because you produce urine does not mean your kidneys are functioning. Its the quality that your kidneys filter the toxins.
Doing more dialysis can produce better lab results. Along with doing more days, dialyzing more hours is also better at toxin removal. Longer, slower and more frequent dialysis will produce much better results than shorter treatments whether daily or 3x in center.
