Title: Transplant didn't happen. Sadness!
Post by: hotnspicyazgirl on November 18, 2010, 10:57:51 PM
I just wanted to update you all. I did not end up having the transplant today. Apparently I was a backup, and because Mayo "owed" a kidney to another hospital out of state...it went to that person.
I am remarkably ok with this news. I am disappointed, but believe that the Lord above knows what He is doing, and has a plan for me. I might be in shock, but I think I am ok.

Thank you for all of the love, and well wishes. Okarol, thank you for the personal message.

Much love,
Deanna

Bad luck Deanna, I am sorry it did not work out. The good news is you were called, and that means you're on the radar for future calls. I hope you miracle comes soon.  :cuddle;

I don't understand.. why would they bother calling if they were going to give the kidney to someone else?  I'd probably be homicidal if someone did that to me

When they do the tissue match they notify the best match at the local area, but sometimes the kidney is sent elsewhere. I have never heard of a center calling potential recipients without planning to transplant locally but it doesn't surprise me. Another friend was called in California that she had a matching kidney that was being sent from Maine. After getting her in to the hospital, taking more blood, confirming the match, she ended up not getting it because they couldn't get a commercial flight arranged. Crazy huh?
For each kidney they call 4 to 7 people. They are all matching, but the 1st person is the one with the most wait time. But sometimes, due to illness or logistics, the 1st person, or 2nd or 3rd back up, might not be the recipient. There's a specific window of time for the organ to be used so everyone has to be ready, even if they are 6th back up.

What a shock!  Oh my, I am so sorry that this time it didn't happen for you, but another call could call tomorrow.  I'm wishing you all the very best. :cuddle;
 Go out and have a fun weekend and try to forget all about this stupid kidney stuff for a while.

Disappointing news for sure, but like Karol said you are now on "the radar" for future calls.  Now you have time to prepare a little.  Get things ready around your house, at your work, etc. and keep your hospital bag packed!  That wasn't your kidney.  But your kidney is coming.   :beer1;

Im sorry  :(  But like others have said, at least you KNOW your being noticed and on 'their' schedule, so hopfully in your right time, (or *His*  ;) ) your kidney will happen..  keep the faith  :pray;

I still don't understand.. I was only ever called once.. and I actually got the kidney that time.

For anyone in the province that I live in, it's at least a 4 hour drive to the hospital where the transplant will happen, because we have to go out of province.  If we drove all the way there, and the transplant didn't happen, they'd better be paying our gas.

I was there almost a full day before the kidney was.  The security guard told my mom that it arrived by taxi a few hours before the surgery

Because you are not close to the hospital it's possible that you were never called as a back up because your team knew it would be a hardship. Or you just never had a tissue match prior to the call you did get.

If that's the case, then no one from my province would ever be called as a backup, as we all have to go to the same out of province hospital for transplant
