Title: Fan noise
Post by: vcarmody on November 16, 2010, 10:16:31 PM
Our NxStage has had an on going problem with the fan in the back making a very loud noise. It seems to be hitting on something. If we reach around and push up on it the scraping noise goes away but starts back up and we play this game with it till it stops. We don't want to change out our machine because we love our cycler. Besides the fan making that noise I have also noticed the machine seems to be getting louder and louder.  I had seen a post a while ago where someone had said that Nxstage changes out the cyclers yearly for maintenance. Does anyone know if this is the case?

I had several - they never lasted long enough to need yearly maintenance.  Seriously, it's better to call them and have it changed out while it is still working.  If it dies on a holiday weekend, getting a change-out could be a real mess.  There may be a few slight differences from machine to machine, but not enough to risk it failing suddenly.

The Cycler has a built in time counter, If I remember right it is several thousand hours, it will beep a code when you near that time, call tech support and they will arrange a swap of the Cycler, it took us almost 3 years to get to that point.
In the meantime, the fan your hear is part of the "Jewel box" attached to the back of the unit, it is a cooling fan for the hard drive inside it, suggest you call tech support and have them ship you a replacement jewel box, it is a slight hassle to change it out, but you can manage it.
I never had a problem with the sounds from the Pureflow, whether making a batch or it's stirring action during our sleep, but the pitch of the jewel box fan drove me nuts at sleep time, my fix was to unplug the cycler from the wall outlet after each session, turning off the cycler with it's switch on the back does not effect the jewel box power, it has to have the power cord unplugged from the wall socket.....

Vcarmody,

Sounds like the bearings are bad in the fan.  This happens in computers all the time. Fan probably needs replaced.
They normally do not change out the cycler yearly if nothing is going on. I have had my current cycler for almost 3 years. As long as the cycler is functioning properly, no alarms and bloodwork is fine, you should be ok, but they may replace it anyways for the fan issue. not sure what the procedure is for this issue.

Recently our cycler was changed out for another problem.  I was amazed that the new cycler fan is almost (but not quite) silent.  What a pleasant surprise.
