Title: Looks like I've got a potential donor
Post by: ACRViper on November 07, 2010, 03:59:08 PM
He's in his 20s (I'm 60yo) and the same blood type. There's more to know for sure. I guess we've both got to get some antigen/antibody testing at some point.

I was diagnosed and been on hemo since the middle of May. All the while my urine output has been basically normal. In fact it's increased noticeably since I started drinking apple cider about a month ago? I haven't been on water restriction from the start, and they're not taking much water out of me during hemo. Usually it's on the minimum setting.

I'd like to give my kidneys a year to recover on their own rather than rush into a transplant, since that'd be the best outcome. I've been told that once you have the transplant there's no way of knowing whether your own kidneys have started functioning. Chances are slim they'll recover though. My creatinine is staying just over 9. Otherwise the various pre-transplant labs show my health is very good/perfect and I'm not diabetic. So I guess it wouldn't hurt to give it a year.  The donor will wait.

One step at a time I guess

Have you been told that it's possible that your kidneys could recover?  If not, I'd say that it's not going to happen, and I'd move forward with the donor

I personally feel that a 20 year old would be better as a donor for someone closer to his age, who needs a kidney that will last potentially 40 years. Have you thought about becoming involved in a transplant chain, where you will be matched with someone and your donor would donate to another recipient? I guess it's premature to even say this, since you haven't even determined if he's a match.
