Title: Kidney function
Post by: KICKSTART on October 17, 2010, 04:02:47 PM
Ok strange question after all these years but how do you know what your kidney function is at? How is it estimated? Is it by blood results? Do you still get informed if you have any kidney function left when you start dialysis ? Im curious to know as i was never told what mine was or what it declined too.

You can figure it using an online GFR calculator if you know your creatinine level.

Mine shows on my every 3 month visit to the neph. I wish they would just e-mail us with the results, instead of having to wait a week or longer to know how we are doing.

I don't know where you get your LABS done for you NEPH visit, but I have to go to a seperate Clinic (Lab Corp, Quest, etc) to do my Blood Work.  You have to specifically ask the doctor to have them release the test results to you.  I just go to their website, and type in my password, and BAM, there are my results within a day or two.

They won't release them though, without express written approval from your doctor.  At least, that is how it is where I go.

Luckily our labs are donw within the hospital pathology and are often available (at least the standard FBE stuff) before the treatment is over. I usually ask the nurses and they either yell the numbers at me, or make a printout for me. Given they know that I have a self interest in my labs, and have some understanding of the meanings of the numbers, the ranges etc, they are happy enough to share with me. It certainly helps relieve the anxiety if I'm worried about some kind of value.

Thanks guys , we get our labs every month and no issue with seeing them at all , i just wondered how you knew what your kidney function was at or how it was calculated. Not that it really matters for me now ..just curious ! Thanks Bassman !
