At 10:21 am Pacific time on Oct. 21, at least 6.8 million people will take part in what it said to be the largest earthquake drill ever, and the Kidney Community Emergency Response (KCER) Coalition is calling on dialysis clinics to participate.

The purpose of the “Great California ShakeOut” is to help people prepare and practice for an earthquake or any other disaster.

“The ShakeOut is great opportunity for dialysis providers to conduct a mock drill and evaluate the effectiveness of their disaster plans, as required in the Conditions for Coverage. Results of the drill should be reviewed and documented in your  facility’s Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) meetings,” KCER wrote in a flyer.

In addition, KCER said a clinic does not have to be in California to participate. Anyone interested can sign up at www.ShakeOut.org.

In addition, KCER said it will hand out a brief pre- and post-drill questionnaire “to identify best  practices, lessons learned, and opportunities for improvement that can be shared with the renal community. To participate with KCER, send an email with your name and organization to mail@kcercoalition.com.”
This is a great opportunity for dialysis clinics to figure out what works and what doesn’t work before the real thing happens. In addition, it seems like the best way to get a real-time assessment on how a large population interacts during a disaster. It may be beneficial to see where your dialysis clinics fits in during the chaos.
