well when i was 9 years old i was dagnosed with kidney problems. I got a biopsy and since then they gave me medicine for my blood pressure and just went to clinic visits regularly. I hated going to the doctor, I still do. well at about age 15 i stopped following with the clinic visits and I wouldn't drink my blood pressure pills. I felt like I was fine that i didn't needed any medicines, i felt strong healthy. But the bad news were that I wasn't. Slowly my blood pressure kept rising and at about age 19 started retaining liquids and my legs and face were swollen in the morning. I didn't wanted to go see the doctor but one day we just went to emergency and from there on the nightmare began. I was on the hospital for a month and a half. than came out but had to go back in for two whole weeks.... and than i got a cather er..it lasted more than usual about a year and eight months, the fistula was placed on October 2009 and was in use until January 2010. since than it has been much better since i can swim, shower and sweat doing sports...

I can understand a teenager feeling good and not thinking they need to see doctors!!
I was not diagnosed with PKD until I was about 40 and it is such a slow progressing disease.. I still feel pretty good and yet my kidneys are shot. I would have expected to feel much worse at GFR 7 than I do!! I still can't wrap my head around the fact that I would be close to death if I did not start Dialysis....
and compare to you I am an old fogy... LOL
Glad the fistula is letting you get back to some fun you have been missing!!
And I hate going to doctors too....

Welcome to the group, JP. Like you I was diagnosed with high blood pressure in my 20s and chose to do nothing about it. We always think we're invincible when we're young! Glad you joined. Hope you find all the information you need.

@ carol1987 well.. yeah the dialysis part is just hard for many, but good for alot. i guess our family members prefer to see us on the dialysiis machine than in a grave yard...as for me i'd rather be on dialysis and enjoy a couple of years...oh and one more thing we have to have faith on our saviour.....give our lifes to Jesus and than we got nothing to worry about if we stay here in this life or the next...........
@ peleroja....well yeah when we are young we think nothing can stop us....but its all just a matter of time......my time hit me...but it was for a change......or else i dont know where i would be right now........maybe lost!!!!

since than it has been much better since i can swim, shower and sweat doing sports...
and I agree with carol1987 - it is unbelievable that kidney function can be so low and that we still didn't feel 'that sick'. I tell everyone now to have their kidney function checked - it's my little soapbox thingy - as the earlier you are treated the better it may be for you. I feel so much better, think so much more clearly than before starting dialysis at eGFR 8. And I wouldn't have said I was 'sick'.

Welcome to our community! And yup, I know about that denial phase. I was warned that I should see a nephrologist an entire year before things got so bad that I finally had to be driven to the hospital by my daughter who had no licence!! At that point I was prepped for dialysis!! I am thankful to be here, and just 4 months ago, I was present at the birth of my beautiful grandson, Jayden. Though I hate dialysis (have not yet got accustomed to the needles after 5 years!), I am so grateful that I can still enjoy life and my family.
This is a great site for information, support and encouragement - just keep reading and keep posting. You will soon find that this is a genuine family here. :grouphug;
