Title: We're putting our beloved Greyhound, Frost, to sleep tomorrow
Post by: kellyt on September 13, 2010, 07:56:09 PM
I am beyond sad.  I actually "scheduled" his death.  I have been a wreck all day and will be even worse tomorrow.  I scheduled it for 4:45 p.m. so that I could spend the entire day right next to him.  He's 14-years-old and really starting to show his age.  He developed a limp a few weeks ago that really slows him down.  His back hips are weak and he cannot stand for long.  But the one thing that really forced me to do this now is he's started to defecate in his sleep.  Luckily nothing that's been to difficult to clean, but nonetheless not good for him or me.  I have to constantly make sure he's lying on something to protect the floor, plus I worry about him endlessly (day and night).  My life has suffered in the last few months cause I hate to leave him home when we go out.  14 is pretty much the average life span for Greyhounds and he has lived a great life.  I just feel so guilty.  He is my child.  He knows all my secrets and fears.  I will miss him terribly.   :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Kelly, It's only two weeks since I put my lovely puss, Blackman, down. I know the grief you're feeling, and will continue to feel. I also know that you realise that the time is right. Frost will always be in your heart.

Absolutely right Galvo. Kelly, I know how hard this is for you. I had my beloved cat pur down over a year ago, and I still think of him eery day. We have another cat now, and he is really a wonderful cat, but he will never be my Sammy. My BFF. You are doing the right thing for him. Let him have some peace.

Frost had a delicious breakfast of milk and rice cripsy treats.  His great love is food, so I figure he'll live it up today.   :)

That's the spirit Kelly ! pamper him! spoil him! make it christmas for him! He knows you love him. Try not to feel guilty.. what you're doing is for HIM to be out of pain, discomfort etc. They are our best friends who love us without condition, the least we can do is do what's right for them.

Hang in there. Show him the best day you can, and say goodbye with love and affection. That you are there means the world to him.

Treasured Friend

I lost a treasured friend today
The little dog who used to lay
His gentle head upon my knee
And share his silent thoughts with me...
He'll come no longer to my call
Retrieve no more his favorite ball
A voice far greater than my own
Has called him to His golden throne.

Although my eyes are filled with tears
I thank Him for the happy years
He let him spend down here with me
And for his love and loyalty
When it is time for me to go
And join him there, this much I know...
I shall not fear the transient dark
For he will greet me with his bark.

Oh Kelly, I am so sorry.  Frost is painfree now and that is good.  You are the one in pain and I can only imagine how much you are hurting.   Sending you so much love and caring hugs -----   :cuddle;      :cuddle;      :cuddle;

Thank you for the poem, YL.  It's beautiful.   Thank you ALL of you for your kind words of support.  This is so difficult for me.  He's my son.

I have told Frost he will be running fast pain free and there will be rivers of milk and fields of french fries.  His two favorite things.

Oh Kelly... I'm so sorry... It's bad enough when our pets slip away naturally, but when we have to make the awful decision, well.... It's just awful... I have had to do it...

On the other hand, the fact that poor Frost is losing his dignity by becoming incontinent, well, it's not fair to him not to make that decision...

I'm thinking of and praying for you and Frost....

God bless... :grouphug;

Darth....

Thank you Darth.   :cuddle;

Karol, his racing name was Snow Frost.  His owner/breeder's last name was Snow and his entire litter was Snow xxx.  He was the 8th pup out, born in June 1996.  He raced until 2001.  When he was retired he fortunately came into the possession of The Heart of Texas Greyhounds, a fabulous adoption group.  He was adopted out in July 2001 to a couple.  The man was apparently a real azz and kept threatening to hurt/kill Frost just to hurt his wife so she released him back to the adoption group.  We went to Pet Smart one Saturday in November 2001 to get some information on ferrets and the adoption group was having their "Show N Tail" there.  We mingled amongst the beatiful dogs for hours and decided to adopt one.  We took Frost for a walk around the store and filled out the paperwork.  He came home with us then and he's been my baby every since.

I'm having so much trouble with this because he could go a while longer.  He's limping bad, but he can get up and go when he wants (food) :).  The incontinence is the biggest threat to me, but his health will only continue downhill.  He has multiple little tumors all over his body (neck, legs, buttocks) and although he eats a good amount I have trouble keeping his weight up.  He hates the outdoors and can no longer travel in the car well.  His balance is all off.  His back hips are really weak (good some days, really bad others).  I can't crate him anymore because of his hips.  He comes out and his back legs will stiffen up really bad.  We have given him the absolute best life possible.  Everyone lovs Frost and he loves everyone in return.  Never met another animal he didn't like...dog or otherwise.  He's great with kids and anyone who ever babysat for us fell in love with him, too.  He's the best.  He will be missed soooo much.

I am so sorry to hear about you having to put your beloved Frost down. I had to put my Boxer down, it's been 8 years ago now, and I still cry when I think about her. She was the first dog I have ever had from pup to death. She lived to 13 (which is quite old for a Boxer) and survived heart worms. She was the best dog ever. I'll be thinking of you. <3

It's sad, Kellyt, but you did the right thing.

It's cruel to keep an animal alive beyond its natural time but many do so.
