Title: 9 years later..... 9/11
Post by: Rerun on September 11, 2010, 10:29:14 AM
Nine years later we are in a place of remembrance and of contemplation.

I remember where I was watching the news as the second plane plowed into the Trade Tower.  I thought it was a preview of some sick movie.

My thoughts and prayers go to the famlies of 9/11.  May we never forget.

I hope they have the new buildings up by next year.  It's been a painful wound in the middle of NYC for far to long.

We should remember that not all of the victims were white, Christian and American.  People of many faiths, cultures and nationalities lost their lives, and their families do not speak with one monolithic voice.

Far too many have already forgotton. It's a shame. A memorial or national monument should be in that spot only.

At one time, I would have agreed with this.  However, putting another building there and filling it with tenants brings in tax money that NYC could use to help fund all kinds of things for those who live in the city.  That's very valuable real estate.  Like most American cities, NYC is having problems funding services like emergency response services.  That money could also be used to pay for the medical expenses incurred by emergency responders who are still feeling the effects of their injuries.

Just my opinion.  I'm hoping there could be some compromise.

Yes, they probably could put " a building" there and make money from it. However, a spot where close to 3000 people died from an act of spineless terrorism is and always will be sacred ground. Much like the Arizona memorial in Hi. Just my  :twocents;

That senseless act changed our world forever.  You would not believe how that has impacted countries that were not even involved.  In our little territory here, for instance, my daughter and I used to take some moments to just hang out in the departure lounge of our ferry dock.  It was on our way as we walked home and it has A/C.  No one would ever say anything and we would just have a pleasant half-hour or so before we continued our way home.
Now, that place is full of security.  You cannot go in except you have a ticket to travel.  You have to clear security now (taking off of belts, etc.)

I too remember that awful moment.  A teacher stopped me on the corridor and asked if I had heard what had happened.  We ran to the staffroom and looked at the tv and saw when the second plane hit the tower.  I think we were totally in shock for the entire day.  Don't know if any teaching took place.  A lot of learning did, though, as we came to understand what fanaticism, extremism and terrorism can do.

I don't disagree with you by any means, but a lot of people in NYC could be helped by that money.  Maybe they could use some of it to help out the families of the victims and of the NYFD.  Maybe they could take a percentage of the tax revenue and start a "Families of 9/11" fund.  I just don't see how there could be a memorial that is a place of respect and reflection exist in the middle of Manhattan.  I hope the planners can find a solution that would be acceptable to everyone, but unfortunately, not many people seem to want to find a workable plan.

Is there any kind of memorial at the Pentagon?  Surely there is...

Actually, I just heard on the news tonight and did not realize it before, but there is a very tall building being erected on the site. I would hope that there will be pools or something for reflection. The current most popular name is Freedom Towers. Sounds good to me.

This sounds like a good plan.  I had not heard about this, so thanks for the information.

There will be one tall building, reminecent(sp?) of the trade center and some smaller buildings.  There will be a pool and a wall that will bear the names of all killed there that day.

I live in New York City, and thought everyone understood what was going on at ground zero.
There are several buildings going up around the site.

This will give you a better understanding of what's happening at the new World Trade Center complex:

OK, I'm officially annoyed.  Why hasn't our media told us about this?  Not all of us live in NYC, ya know.  I guess the media is interested only in those "ground zero" stories that will fan conflict.  I had no idea there was so much building already going on, that there was a plan already being executed, and I blame our national media for this.

Thank you, Zach, for informing us.

Sorry MM, but I think it depends on what media you've been watching.  I've been following the developments for a while now, including the endless debates on which design to use and even the strange mess with the memorial cornerstone that was placed and removed.  They had quite a bit on the locals news here on the 11th about how far they have gotten with construction, and I'm in MI.  The mosque story caught the main headlines, of course, but the other info has been on, too.

I've heard about the endless debates, but I guess our local news here in Chicagoland focuses more on Blago and children getting shot in the streets.  I've not heard much on the national news about how much construction there HAS been, but then again, we don't really get much news these days, rather, we what we get is commentary, and entirely different beast.  I admit that I avoided the news on the 11th because I figured it would be more about controversy than anything else.
