Post by: alrightstill on December 12, 2006, 12:16:32 AM
Does anyone have any home remedies for this?

I dont know what's causing it, but it seems to be getting worse..  :(

All my mom ever told me (she was a hairdresser) is that your scalp becomes dry and flakes if it is not massaged / brushed enough.

There are special shampoos for this but I guess ones with tar in it are really good. Dunno..

I don't know if it's still manufactured, but when I had this problem, I used "Harold's Tar Shampoo".  It didn't smell too bad, wasn't too expensive, and it worked well; originally it was by prescription only, then it went OTC.   It was strong stuff - you lathered up, left it in about 10 min., then rinsed it out, twice a week.          BTW, my problem was many years ago, and I had had what I considered terminal dandruff for several years, had been to several doctors & a nutritionist about it, etc., nobody could figure it out; I could just shake my head and it looked like I was in a snow globe (thank goodness I'm blonde).  A few years after it started, I was divorced, and my long, drawn-out custody battle was settled, and -- you guessed it! -- my dandruff went away.  It hasn't come back in 30 years.  I know the two were not necessarily related, but I was dealing with a horrendous amount of stress, so maybe . . . .

Rinsing with distilled white vinegar can sometimes help.  Rinsing with listerine can sometimes help.  Being diabetic or having insulin resistance can cause the yeast levels in your body to be out of whack, possibly causing dandruff, so if regular remedies don't work, it might be something to ask your doctor.  Also psoriasis could be a culprit.

Tetrey oil is usually helpful with dandruff.

The "cure" they are describing sounds like vinegar, like I suggested.   :lol;  "Cheap, available, everyone has it at home..." etc.

Well, it could be falling out as opposed to just being dandruff from stress!

I have been losing lots of hair lately AND pretty stressed..  :chillpill;

By the way, I read somewhere (maybe it was here) to heat olive oil and dab it on your head with a cottonball, leave it on for a half an hour then rinse... that seemed to work!

But I actually combined remedies, when I rinsed it out and then shampooed, I crushed 5 asprins and mixed it with my shampoo..

In the end, Im not sure which actually WORKED.. but I may be doing both for now on everytime I shower.   ::)

Thanks for the help everyone!
