Title: My first week of hemodialysis
Post by: Stoday on August 02, 2010, 03:57:30 PM
I had no trouble at all with my fistula operation. Good luck doesn’t last though and now Fate is getting its own back.

First session lasted 0 mins. Yeah, the tech infiltrated me with the first stick. ‘Better let it rest for a couple of days, see ya Monday’. On Monday successfully got 2 hours with a single needle. Same again on Wednesday. Now I feel GREAT!!! On top of the world, better than I’ve felt for months.

So on Friday they try two needles. After ˝ hour I get a swelling in the vein above the venous needle. I’m not sure what happened, but I think the vein got dilated. Anyway, they stopped the dialysis, so I only got ˝ hour that day. I have to wait 4 days before the next session, which is Tuesday afternoon.

My forearm now looks as though it’s been run over by a steam roller...

Well, they say that the first few months of dialysis are the hardest, and I guess you've proved that to be true.  Geez, that looks gruesome.  Does it hurt?  It sure hurts looking at it! :'(

Well im glad to hear you felt better then you have in a LONG time for a few days at least.
Hopefully they will get everything sorted out and you can be (on top of the world) for the rest of your time on dialysis until a transplant comes along.

I hope the arm doesnt hurt to bad....

Infultrations are TERRIBLE! I am so sorry and hope gets better for u. :cuddle;
I looked like barney for the first 2 years of HD, ended up switching clinics before the infultrations ceased. Davita... I dont advise anyone going to a Davita clinic, heard nothing but bad about them, and my own experience was... not so good to say the very least.
Also, some clinics allow u to learn to poke urself so that may be an option, also heard of a button hole, but i dont know enough about that to even tell u exactly how it works.

How did they do dialysis with a single needle? Do you also have a catheter?

Thanks for all your kind words. They are much appreciated.

As for my arm — it only aches a little bit.

The single needle method uses the one needle to take blood into the machine and pump it back out again, so less efficient than two needles.

This exact same thing happened to me on my first session. Both attempts at needling me ended in infiltration and the bruise was pretty spectacular!

I've been having single needle dialysis for weeks and weeks now and finally on Friday they managed to get 2 needles in. Sadly the second needle wasn't successful on Monday but I'm confident that tonight it will work again. Just keep on doing your fistula exercises and stay positive. You'll get there in the end :)

yikes! Even when my fistula infultrated it didn't look half as bad as that. crap!

hoping things improve for you and they can get you a proper dialysis treatment without issues!!

I dialysed with two needles for the first time today and everything went OK. Seems I'm getting into the swing of things.

I still haven't started to hate dialysis; rather look forward to it because it means I no longer feel so bloody ill.

i never knew about single needle dialysis either!   hope things improve for you!  I know when I first started last spring, they infiltrated me not long after the fistula was ready...don't care to ever do that again!

praying it gets better! :bestwishes;

I had a few one needle dialysis sessions .... the tech called it "click-clack". It pulls first and the pushes back threw the same needle. The treatment is not that great but it is better than nothing.

Holy Cow!!!  I hope things are going better for you.  Your pic is rather frightening, I have never seen anything like it!  I really hope your arm doesn't hurt as bad as it looks...

When I started I was infiltrated a lot now never, I finally asked the nurse why I have not and she said as time went by your fistula grows bigger and now it's big enough I could stick you from accros the room. Since the beginning of dialysis I have been afraid to move my arm much it turns out now I can move it if I am careful. This is a problem that will be solved over time as your fistula gets larger and safer,

Anyone notice the dates in this thread?

2010    FIVE years ago.

In a way it's good that it was brought up as the picture of the infiltrated arm is quite graphic.  But it simply proof of one of the more common problems with needleing.  Even experienced techs sometimes have issues getting the job done.  Not intentionally but the pain is the same, and depending on the severity can take many days to clear up.

I know if it were me and my first time at clinic I would be hard pressed to even think about returning, and when I did, I do not believe that I could sit still and let the same tech try again.

IHD saves ALL threads for everyone to read and hopefully learn something, but Please notice the date.  If it is more than just a few weeks, or months, especially years, you may want to consider withholding comment without  contributing meaningful advise.

Take Care,
