Title: Need advice for co-worker!
Post by: AlohaBeth on July 08, 2010, 06:33:15 AM
Good Morning everyone!

I was asked a favor this morning and I knew immediately it was something you all could help me with.

My boss's daughter, a completely fantastic 17 year old girl, is going through something no one should have to go through and something we know all too well.

Her best friend, a 25 year old woman, was diagnosed at age 5 with cystic-fibrosis.  She is currently at UNC, weighing only 85 pounds, on 8 liters of oxygen and a feeding tube.  She has been told when she gets her weight up she can receive the double lung transplant she needs to survive.

When she receives that transplant, which of course, we all pray she will, her mother intends to take an extended leave of absence to help her daughter.  Unfortunately she has no vacation time left (using it all to be with her daughter during hospital stays) and my boss's daughter wants to help ease the financial burden this will cause.

She would like to raise funds in the community to help her friend and her friends family deal with the extra cost of organ donation.  Her mother, knowing about mom (Paris) thought I may have some insight on how to do this.

I know there is a website my mother told me about a couple years ago that can help people manage the money they have raised for this very reason, but I don’t remember the sites name.  Also, does anyone have fundraising suggestions that have worked for you over the years?  I have raised thousands for the NKF – but never on a personal basis.

Thank you so much for your help and guidance!!

Aloha,
Beth

I think I know what you mean, but cannot locate the info right now, will keep looking.
I recently met twin sisters who both received lung transplants due to CF. They are amazing women and their story is a documentary called "The Power of Two." I think you can reach them here http://www.thepoweroftwomovie.com/about-ana-isa/ - hope that helps.
I'll post more when I find it.

Beth, Otto and I had AMAZING people put not only a benefit together but also my girlfriends went to our Church council who put together a Thrivent appeal. Thrivent matched donations up to $5 thousand dollars, we NEVER in a million years thought they would need to match up to that amount but our Church raised MUCH more then that.

In Ca. if you are a caregiver for some one, you can sign up for IHSS. In home supportive services and they pay you. Its not an awful lot of money, but you could get by on it. Check with your local state government and see if you state has it. Its worth a try.
