Title: Franks next surgery is Thursday
Post by: Dianejt on June 28, 2010, 05:00:48 PM
So they will remove his last kidney Thursday.

We got some good & bad news this weekend. The good news is that the stomach fistula is finally healing on it's own. 8 weeks of TPN, he was able to start sipping water & iced tea over the weekend. They were concerned that it would not heal itself & he would need a major surgery (again) to fix this.

Now for the bad news
The CT scan he had last week showed there is a 4cm/5cm leision on his pelvic wall. They immediately did a bone scan and that came back negative (naughtier good news). The oncology department became involved in the case. They feel that the mass is blood, fluid & "something solid".  They will decide on the next coarse of treatment after the surgery is done.

The plan is for the Kidney to be removed first because of the hemorrhaging 3 weeks ago which brought him back to the hospital. He has been receiving dialysis 3 or 4 times a week here in the hospital. We are planning on doing Nxstage but I don't know how the transition from in hospital dialysis to our training for Nxstage?

They have placed him on a pain pump & now the pain is under control. No more waiting while the nurse answers the buzzer & then get's the pain med.

It has now been 19 days in the hospital this time. I'm sure it will be at least 2 or more weeks to go. We live 1 hour drive so I have been spending one night sleeping on a cot in his room the next night I sleep at home in my own bed. Needless to say I can't sleep well down there They are in & out all night, which I'm very happy with the kindness & caring the staff has been to both of us. My Dad and My son , wife & 2 children live with us so I need to come & see my family & keep them posted.

Bless your heart.  Hang in there and you may want to hold off on home dialysis because you will end up doing all that too.  This way you drop him off at the clinic and sit with him for a few minutes and then go get some shopping done or just read.  I'm not being harsh.  I'm the one on diaysis and that is what I would want my loved one to do.  Maybe that is why I don't have a loved one?   >:(
