Title: World Cup Fever
Post by: Poppylicious on June 12, 2010, 04:23:55 AM
Having searched and found no thread (please spank me if I'm wrong) I decided we needed to have a dedicated World Cup thread.  This may or may not be a popular view and if not, it can die a fast death, but at least I'll have done my bit in trying to drum up interest.

 ;D

Today's Big Match (from my point of view) is England v. USA.  I stand to win a fish and chip supper from my local chip shop on Monday if England win 4-1.  I think I'm probably being over-optimistic ... the USA can't be *that* bad at football.

Happy footballing!

I watched the opening ceremonies and they were fabulous.  I am very excited that South Africa is the host site.  Just like China with the Olympics, you learn so much about a country with these type of events.     I am not a sport addict, but I really enjoy the big final competitions of any sporting event.   Should be lots of fun  :2thumbsup;    I am looking forward to watching some of the matches.

What do you think of the new ball? I think it is too easy to bend. Being a former goalkeeper, I wouldn't have wanted to see that ball curving even more...Sid

It seems to be a day dream that England could win U.S. 4-1.  The soccer has been very popular within the U.S. youths during the last 15 years. It is not surprising if the U.S. can win the world cup 10 to 15 years from now.

I'm with you Paris. I enjoy the exposure to another country. I also like being a part of the greater world community in watching what so much of the world is really wrapped up in. In our house we watch it on Univision (Spanish language) which adds to the international flavor although I do spend some time lost in the language.

OK IHDers, we've got a good part of the world represented right here, including South Africa. Let's see some World Cup posts!!!

Well, Miss Poppy, I trust your local chippy will be serving you hamburgers and french fries after England's draw with the USA!!

The World Cup is my favorite sporting event; when I lived in England, I'd always have the wall chart from the Radio Times in my little hands for the whole month.  I am so excited that I just may awaken at 6AM to see Slovenia v Algeria.

England's keeper must be sick as a parrot.   I don't know what Capello is going to do now.  I'd love to see David James in goal again as he does provide entertainment with some of his less than spectacular goalkeeping.  And where was Wayne Rooney all night?  I was impressed with the way the US effectively shut him down.

I enjoy watching Portugal because they invariably have the best looking players.  You know it's true...!  I lived in Spain for a short while, so I always like to see them do well.  Can never pull for Germany.  Bored with Brazil.  Would love to see a side win that is from neither Europe or S. America.  Will be pulling for England, though, should USA not WIN IT ALL!  Well, I can hope...!

Huge disappointment only getting the draw with the USA. Worried about Rooney. Do you think he's still got a bit of that ankle injury niggle. Also I think some of the tabloid gutter press's hounding of goalkeeper Green's mistake has been disgracefull. It's just typical, slaughter one of our own just to sell a few rags! This could ruin his carreer if England don't get throughto the next group stage due to the loss of 2 points from this game. Come on England you can do it!  :ukflag

Oh, the British tabloids are ruthless.  England should advance out of the group stage, and then Green's gaff will be forgotten.  However, with Slovenia winning over Algeria, the pressure is on both the Brits and the septics.

Can I have a glass of orange juice for every time Jurgen Klinsmann says "awesome"?

Cahill's red card was harsh and doomed the Socceroos.  Germany looked clinical as always even without Michael Ballack (sp?).  They looked very, very good, and comparing them to England, England looked confused and vulnerable.  England is going to have to win their group or else they will be knocked out by the Germans.  But ya never know...that's why they play the game!

Just have watched Aust. play Germany. I never thought that we would win but to be absolutely thrashed like that was so disappointing. We didn't show the normal passion or never say die attitude. Maybe our players are just too old.

I'm not much of a futbolista, but I gotta say that today's game (Germany vs Australia) was the most entertaining so far. Sorry folks, but England vs USA yesterday was boring.

Murf, I was hoping (against hope) that Australia would win.

Oh, that's right!!!  You're in SA!  How exciting!  What has it been like over there?  Are the vuvuzelas driving you mad?  I'd love to go to a World Cup match.  I went to a qualifying match last year at Soldier Field...USA v Honduras.  It was very exciting!

It's Brazil v North Korea right now.  I didn't even know North Korea had a team!  The top ranked team v the lowest ranked team.  Interesting.

Dialysis and World Cup - a good match. Either the games are so boring that they put you to sleep or so entertaining that they hold your attention. Not bad for us caregivers either. (Somehow, though, I have had to go out and pick up McDonald's dollar menu breakfasts to enjoy with the matches. Must be some subliminal messaging going on...  ;) )

Sorry your time zone is not compatible RM.

I did enjoy the NZ match tying it up in the extra minutes at the end of the game!

The blokey has offered me odds of 1,000 - 1 on New Zealand.  I would give him £10 in the hope of getting £10,000 in winnings but he'd probably have to remortgage the house (because obviously they're going to win ...)

Those bluddy vuvuzela instrument things are driving me bonkers.  I keep thinking a swarm of very angry giant bees is going to attack the players.  Do they sound good when not trumpeted by a bunch of football fans in an enclosed space?!

All my neighbours have massive England (St. George) flags hanging from their windows.  Even the little old lady next door has one fixed to her wheelie bin.  I feel as though I'm letting the side down.  I'm not really a big football fan; I'm just a sheep (and very patriotic when it suits me).  However, I was a tad upset when the ITV HD channel (which showed the England/USA match) screwed up for ten seconds and we missed the only goal that England scored.  Tsk.

How about the sausage races at Miller Park during Brewers' games?  They recently added a chorizo...how cosmopolitan and inclusive of them.  I love the sausage races!  It's so stupid that it makes me laugh whenever I see it.

And then there's Ozzy Osbourne singing "Take me out to the Ball Game" at Wrigley.  Give me vivizelas any day.

If they had Sausage races the entire game that would be irritating too. The only thing that should go on the entire match is the football. The horns don't seem to be in response to the play, they're about the same loudness throughout, that's where they go from local color to obnoxious.

Well,

I have a fun park about 1km away from my house and can hear vuvuzelas blaring almost 24hours a  day so needless to say I am not a very big fan of the noize. This is where most games are shown free of charge on big screen TV's. The cold is keeping most people away. The excitement is all around and we saw some foreigners in the mall and movies. I am not too happy.. I don't think they are giving a good "picture" through of the SOUTH Africa but mostly AFRICAN culture. I did not "get" most of the opening ceremony myself and I live here. heheheh but it was entertaining to watch just a bit short.

I live 10km from Johannesburg OR Tambo Airport so let me know when you or family is visiting - I can meet them.

I wasn't expecting Bafana-bafana (our SA team) to win as they were ranked 83rd on the list. They played like amatures....

Anyone here feel any sympathy for the French?  I happened to be in France in 2002 when they didn't get out of the group stage, and I couldn't help but giggle.

Big day for England and the USA!  Both teams really need a win.

I'm with you, Paris!  :-*

New York Times Op-Ed columnist Roger Cohen had an interesting piece entitled, Freedom’s Blaring Horn, about the games and " ... patriotism, optimism and the sense of shared identity ..."

About the vuvuzelas he writes:
"Let’s talk vuvuzela for a moment. Players have complained. Facebook pages are dedicated to banning it. Ear plugs are selling briskly among European fans. Intolerable horns!

I have news for the discomfited: This is actually Africa. The horn sounds to summon. From the kudu horn made from the spiral-horned antler to the plastic horn is not such a great distance.

The vuvuzela carries powerful symbolism. Rugby, the traditional sporting stronghold of the white Afrikaner, has shunned it. Soccer, dominated by blacks, has embraced it. Yet today Afrikaners flock into black Soweto to watch rugby and whites and blacks both carry their vuvuzelas into World Cup games.

I’m sorry, French players will have to suffer their headaches: these are not minor political miracles. As one comic here tweeted: “After one weekend Europe wants to ban the vuvuzela — if only they’d acted this fast when banning slavery!” ...

I've been a sports fan all my life, and I have seen many, many bad calls over the years.  I've always felt that human error is part of the game, and that if your team is good enough, they will still win through.  But this call in the US game that disallowed their third goal, thus depriving them of a critical win, just may be a determining factor in who goes through and who goes home.  I still have not heard what the foul was; it seems to be a mystery.  None of the talking heads can figure it out, either.  I think it was simply a mistake by the official, and it is a shame.  The US is simply going to have to win its final match and accumulate as many goals as possible.  If they're good enough, they'll go through.

I think the opening ceremony was to include all of Africa, not just South Africa.  Beth's friend is from Tunisia and he is an African, but also does not relate to some of the opening ceremony. ( I think Tunisia and South Africa are at opposite ends of the continent!)    Kind of like Canada's ceremonies for the Olympics.  So many different cultures and customs to display in a short time.   I am still enjoying all of it and love watching and learning.
I love all the big sport events.  Maybe that should be a goal -- to make it to one huge event anywhere.    :2thumbsup;

So how does the tie breaker work? Is it net goals or the most goals scored or ... ? to see who goes on?

The call made no sense to this novice.
Title: Re: World Cup Fever

Bill, the call made no sense to anyone, novice or pro.  The really frustrating thing about it is that FIFA won't even comment.  I think the ref, in his first World Cup match, just made a mistake.  FIFA could at least say that much.

As for tiebreakers, they look at goal differentials.  You get 3 points for a win and one for a draw.  No points for a loss.  If, at the end of the first round, any teams have the same number of points, then they look at how many goals each team scored throughout all three matches; the team with the most goals scored has the advantage.  The top 2 teams in each group go through to the next round.

This is why it was important that the US scored two goals.  England, for instance, also drew (tied), but since they scored no goals, the US has the advantage (at the moment).

I'm with you both, Paris and Zach. This is the World Cup from South Africa. If vuvuzelas, is their thing, so be it. It adds to the international experience in my opinion. And given their context as presented by you, Zach, I too embrace them.

MooseMom, thanks for the info. I am generally in the dark about soccer rules and World Cup structure. Yes, I will have it all figured out by July 11, but I will have forgotten it all by June of 2014!
(bzzz)
With England playing Slovenia and the US playing Algeria, I think it is more likely that the US will advance, putting the bad call behind us all.

(But NZ just scored against Italy, go figure. It appears that nothing is for sure in this World Cup!)

Nothing is for sure except:

He made another bad call earlier in the game when he called Findley for a handball - an intentional handball - when the  ball ricocheted off Findley's face and maybe grazed his hand on the way down. I think this means Findley won't be able to play on Wednesday. That seems like something that could be reversed - how could it be called intentional? The ball had just hit him in the face.

No, FIFA doesn't have instant reply nor the rules that could govern reversal of calls.  Bad calls like the one you mentioned happen all the time and are not usually reviled for very long.  I personally think it is unfair to the refs to expect them to make good calls yet have no recourse in amending bad ones since the rest of the world can see it all replayed again and again, but the ref cannot.

I find myself feeling bad for the ref from Mali.  I have this mental picture of his family proudly watching him, huddled around the TV back in Mali, and then seeing that call.  Well, the fact remains that if the US loses to Algeria because we let them score in the first 4 minutes like we usually do, we don't deserve to advance.

It preserves fairness, and stops match-fixing. In 1982 West Germany fixed their match ... I found this by Googling:

A more recent example occurred in the 1982 FIFA World Cup, West Germany played Austria in the last match of group B. A West German victory by 1 or 2 goals would result in both teams advancing; any less and Germany was out; any more and Austria was out (and replaced by Algeria, who had just beaten Chile). West Germany attacked hard and scored after 10 minutes. Afterwards, the players then proceeded to just kick the ball around aimlessly for the remainder of the match. Algerian supporters were so angered that they waved banknotes at the players, while a German fan burned his German flag in disgust. By the second half, the ARD commentator Eberhard Stanjek refused any further comment on the game, while the Austrian television commentator Robert Seeger advised viewers to switch off their sets.

Hope that helps!

The defense of the U.S. team has a lot of holes and the forwards cannot score, so it is disappointed to see the U.S. lose, but is not surprised. England did not play any better than the U.S. too.

JOHANNESBURG – With global criticism raining down upon him, FIFA president Sepp Blatter did an about face Tuesday, both in tact and possible tactic.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter apologized to England and Mexico for major officiating errors.

Blatter acknowledged major officiating errors in round-of-16 losses by England and Mexico, said he apologized to team officials in both nations and promised to reopen the debate over introducing replay technology, including video review, once this World Cup was over.

Guy visits a dominatrix "How much for total humiliation?"

"£37.50".

"What do I get for that?"

An England shirt...

 :rofl;
Hey Stoday did you hear that the England team visited an orphanage in Cape Town today. “It’s heartbreaking to see their sad little faces with no hope,” said Jamal, aged six.

Ha! Love those!

Yeah Spain!
Yay! I need them to go all the way so I can win some lovely money!

Glad to see Argentina utterly humiliated as I cannot bear coke-snorting Diego "Hand of God" Maradona (and I don't mean the cola...).

Laid a few dollars (big bet of $5) on Netherlands some months ago at $16. So I know who I'll be barracking for.

Been away for awhile, but not from world cup. I was sorry to see Ghana lose. It would have been nice to see an African nation in it until the end, or at least closer to the end.

So, in less than 30 minutes the final begins... an all European final unfortunately. Who to root for Netherlands? Spain? I wonder who they are rooting for in South Africa? Netherlands with their Afrikaner ties? Nelson Mandela would tell everyone that the past is the past. Spain, Espana the mother country (we've been watching it in Spanish on Univision because of the passion...
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!
Que emocionante!

It's a little sad that it is coming to an end. Whoever wins, I just hope that it is an exciting game.

Brazil in 2014? I understand that the vuvuzela shipments have already begun   ;)
