Title: Norwegian Cruise Lines are not NxStage Friendly
Post by: vcarmody on May 25, 2010, 06:15:26 PM
I got a call from my travel agent today advising me that a representative from Norwegian Cruise Lines called her today and said that they had to cancel our reservation (we booked back in Feb).  They said they would not have the correct staff on board to handle an emergency if there was one while we were doing hemo dialysis in our cabin.  Rather then trying to change there decision we decided to book on Celebrity (which is leaving the same day and going to Bermuda also)  it is the sister ship to the one we sailed on last month.  There seem to still be people out there that don't get the whole concept of portable hemo dialysis :thumbdown;

VCarmody,

That is absouletely horrible news. Are you aware the a group NxStagers went on cruise back in January in the Western Caribbean. It was through Carnival on the Carnival  Valor Cruise Ship.
If you have not seen the photos, feel free to visit   NxStageUsers Freedom Cruise (http://www.nxstageusers.com/2010cruise.html)
Its a shame that some companies just dont feel comfortable....I'm sure if there were not mention of dialysis, there would be no problems at all, but proper planning is essential.
Let us know what happens and if you make it out to sea....

ps..NxStageUsers is planing another event in Octorber for those interested. Just check out the NxStageUsers Webpage. It is open to all interested and you are not required to be on NxStage....

I use Dialysis at Sea (They book on Celebrity, Holland Americana and Royal Carribbean.  Somehow, I would rather pay the extra $$ to do "clinic" dialysis 3x per week rather than 5x week with my nxstage on vacation.

They sound great.  I'm glad you ditched the one company and went with the other.

Have a great time.              :bandance;

I would pay extra to never have to D@S again. NxStage vs D@S isn't even close - NxStage is waaay better.

vcarmody any chance you could get that decision in writing?

I would agree Nxtage is better, but I am not on an extended nightly routine.  For me, vacation is all about getting away from the daily routine.  Also, I usually travel alone, and I do not want to hassel w/all the nxtage parts + machine.

Oops, couldn't edit the above.

Also, which makes a big difference on vacation, is that I have no fluid restrictions (very important on vacations).
Now, it I had restrictions, I would consider taking the machine (done that on car trips), but I have not idea how I would deal w/all the "stuff" I would have to bring.

Being on dialysis ain't perfect for being on a trip, but I deal w/it and make it work.  I find a good Marguarita after my session is always quite nice!

I am trying to get something in writing from them.  I did send them and e-mail and am hoping they will send me something back.
