For the last month, my grandma (IHD member "Phurball") has been in very bad shape . It started with some breathing problems which required a few days hospitalization. Not too long after she was released, she fell and broke her ankle, which required surgery to fix. A few days after she was sent to a rehabilitation centre for therapy, she got a bowel obstruction, and peritonitis (she did PD) She had to have surgery to remove the obstruction, and although the surgery itself went well, she has never fully woken up, and she hasn't been able to breath on her own. She has been that way for almost three weeks, however we've seen some improvement in the last few days. She actually responded to us today, and her ventilator was turned down because she was breathing more on her own. She's still got a long way to go, and we know that she still might not get better, so we all need prayers for strength as well. I've been very close to my grandma my whole life, and this has been very hard on me.

Oh Adam, I am so sorry to hear this. You have talked so lovingly of her many times and I remember reading some of her posts, especially the ones about her grandson. Grandmothers hold such a special place in our hearts. I will keep her in my prayers. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers also, because I know how much your heart is hurting. Please let us know how she is doing. :pray;

So sorry that you and she have had to go thru this. I most definitely send good wishes and keep her in my :pray;

I saw her again today (5/25), and I have very good news, and some bad news. The bad news is she wasn't responsive at all today. She squeezed my hand once, but it didn't seem voluntary. However, the good news is she was off the ventilator temporarily when we were there. They are turning the vent off for up to four hours at a time to let her breath on her own with just an oxygen line. She was breathing fairly strong, but her breathing rate was kind of fast. She is showing some other signs that she's getting a little stronger, such as being able to cough. She has a long way to go, but she's a fighter, and, Lord willing, she'll come through this.

Thanks, everybody. We unfortunately found out today that she is aspirating fluid into her lungs and they can't stop it. So now, even though she's off the ventilator most of the time, they don't expect her to make it. They've tried everything they can do to try to stop the fluid, but her lungs keep filling up. It's now just a matter of time.

Sorry I haven't given an update for awhile. She is now off of dialysis, and today she was transfered to a hospice unit. We've been visiting her almost every day, sometimes twice a day, and it sure doesn't get any easier. The only consolation I have is that soon she will be at peace. Thanks for all the support.

My wonderful grandmother passed away last night in her sleep. She is at peace now, but I think I've cried more in the last 12 hours than I have in the last 20 years. I will miss her terribly but I'm glad she's not suffering anymore. Again thank you all for your support.

Adam, I'm very sorry to hear this....
May your much loved gran rest in perfect peace...
God looked around his garden
And He found an empty place.
And then He looked down upon the earth,
And saw your tired face.
He put His arms around you,
And lifted you to rest.
God's garden must be beautiful,
He always takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering,
He knew you were in pain,
He knew that you would never
Get well on earth again.
He saw the road was getting rough,
And the hills were hard to climb,
So He closed your weary eyelids,
And whispered"Peace be thine."
It broke our hearts to lose you .
But you didn't go alone,
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.

I am sorry Adam, that you are going through this. Grandmothers hold such a special place in our hearts. They love us so much and think we are perfect. I still miss mine. There has to be a special place in Heaven for Grandmothers. Prayers for you and your family while you go through the next few days. And my sympathy to all of you, too.
