Title: Lung cancer
Post by: okarol on May 12, 2010, 11:47:09 AM
My mom was treated with chemo 2 years ago for lymphoma and they felt they can control it from getting worse. She got through that okay, but a couple of weeks ago a lung biopsy revealed squamous cell carcinoma in one lung. Ten days ago mom had her upper right lung lobe removed and was in the hospital for 2 days. They did the surgery through her back but she seems to be recovering well, is on oxygen at home. The lab results show the lymph glands and surrounding tissue to be cancer free so hopefully they got it all. She smoked for 58 years of her 74 years. I wonder how she'd have fared is she never had smoked. (Yes, she has now quit.)

I hope they did get it all. It sounds promising.  Dad had a lung removed and did ok with the one left for while.  Also, a lifelong smoker (since he was 12).  He worked in a silver mine in his twenties, had TB in his 40's, and topped it off with emphasyma.  His poor lungs didn't stand a chance. And he never did anything to help make a difference.  He still smoked after his lung was removed.    I am hoping your Mom is smarter than he was and is doing everything she can to help her lungs.     Like you, I wonder how different life would have been if he had never smoked.    You seem to always be dealing with someones "organs", don't you?   I'll keep your Mom in my prayers   :cuddle;

My Dad lost his battle with lung cancer at 72...lifelong smoker, even during treatment for the cancer.

I hope your Mom continues to improve Karol and that she will win this fight.

My mother in law had a lobe removed from her lung at 75 yrs and having never smoked. They got it all and it has never resurfaced and she never had chemo. Today she is doing great, like it never happened. Hopefully your Mom will have similar results.

Thanks.
I just spoke with her and she said she's doing ok without oxygen so that's good.
I arranged meal delivery (one hot meal a day.)
She said she's almost out of toilet paper (keep in mind, I live 45 minutes drive away, while her boyfriend who lives with her is sitting in the livingroom.)  ::)

I apologize to all the lovely men here   ---------  BUT, seriously?  He can't drive to the nearest store and buy some toilet paper?  Let alone make a few meals.  Geez!  Sorry, Okarol!

Good to hear she is doing ok without the oxygen.    I'm keeping all of you in my prayers ---- I think you need all you can get    :cuddle;   :cuddle;

I hope they got it all.  My mom died of lung cancer and never smoked but my dad did smoke so who knows.

So glad to hear your Mom is doing well.  I hope she doesn't have to halve her one hot meal a day with her boyfriend.  It's a shame he can't get up and go buy some toilet paper to help her out.  She will be in my prayers along with you and Jenna.

Love, Mimi

Glad to hear she is feeling some better Karol. Lung cancer is a nasty disease. My late husband had it and finally succumbed to it in 1995. Never put down those cigarettes either. Even had a couple the night before he died. It is truly a terrible addiction. I quit once and then started up again. Wish I had not done that.

I lost both my Mom and my Dad to Lung Cancer within 3 years of each other. I sure hope you all have better results. Medical technology keeps improving every year, never give up hope.  :thumbup;
