Hi my name is Dawn. I am a former dialysis patient. I became a diabetic at the age of 8 years old and then a dialysis patient at the age of 27. I was on dialysis for about 3 1/2 years. I received a transplant Aug. of 2004. All is going well. I had a kidney/pancreas transplant.
As a patient I became a volunteer for activities and loved it. When I wasn't on dialysis I was doing crafts and talking with the other patients. I resumed doing this after my transplant and then went to school to become a Activities Director.
I now work at the facility that I started dialysis at. Not the same branch but same company. I thought it would be a good thing to give back because there were so many people that helped me through the tough time that I was going through. I was a very independent person until I was on dialysis and the illness took that away.
I was very tired after treatment and slept for at least 2 hours after. I know that dialysis kept me alive and I don't believe I ever missed a treatment. But there were definitely days that I didn't want to be there.
In the long run I empathize with all the patients that I work with now and if they don't want to talk or do anything I understand.
I am glad that this web site is out there for those to voice there opinions I hope to be able to talk with some people through a chat line. And I will give this web to the patients that need to vent.
Great job getting this started.

Hi Twitch34! Welcome to our site. I think it is great that someone who "really knows" works at a dialysis unit. I would tend to "listen" to someone who has been there rather than just "talk".
It is like having a skinny aerobics teacher.......she doesn't know! I want an aerobics teacher that has to work at it like I do.

Welcome Dawn! So wonderful to read that a) your transplant is so far working fine and b) you are giving back from a position of having "been there, done that" - I imagine you would be the best activities director they have there just from having some idea what it is REALLY like. I think it is a wonderful way to go and I am sure your paitents apprieciate your understanding and experience.
Gee, at my unit we don't have activities !!
