Title: Lapband Anyone?
Post by: jhodges58 on April 21, 2010, 03:33:43 AM
Hi:

My renal problems stem from high blood pressure and diabetes brought on by morbid obesity. So, at the prompting of my nephrologist, I'm about to undergo a lapband procedure on Friday.

Had some pre-admission bloodwork done last Monday and was concerned that my creatinine levels which have hovered between 3.9 and 4.1 for the past year (I'm not in dialysis yet) shot up to 4.7 due to two weeks on a liquid diet.

Has anyone else gone thru a lapband and seen this kind of spike? Did it come back down after you got off liquids or was that just permanent lost ground? All the doctors have warned the lapband might push me over into dialysis, but we're going this route rather than the gastric bypass because it's far less intrusive and puts less pressure on the kidneys.

Thanks for any info.

I recall the doctor mentioning something about creatinine level and weight loss, maybe having to do with protein loss from muscle... sorry, I cannot recall exactly but if I do I will post it.

I don't have an answer for you, but I do wish you well and will be thinking of you.  Hope the surgery goes well land you feel ok.

Just got back from the hospital -- the anesthesiologist pulled the plug on the surgery. Won't put me under until I undergo dialysis.

Bummer.

Guess I'll talk with the nephrologist next week and figure out what to do.

I am sorry. That had to be hard to hear.  There always seems to be one more thing to do.  I hope your nephrologist can get things sorted out.  Keep us updated.

I tried to go the lapband route, but my doctor told me no, because of some of the issues of getting proteins and stuff like that. I was trying for lapband to lose the weight. but I was able to lose 75 pounds so far just adjusting to a special diet I develop in regards to following a trial and error through lab results. FYI if you are about to start dialysis you are not at your actual weight because of fluid containment and toxin build up. you will learn in dialysis as you go and you can start experimenting to see what your limits are on what you can and cannot do. good luck
