Title: stuck between a rock and a hard place
Post by: rockhounds on April 14, 2010, 10:12:37 AM
Hello,

My husband has been on PD for 4 months now.  I have been lurking for a while now, and have learned a lot from the site. Now the docs have given us a choice to make that I am seeking input on.  I am going to post the long version of my question in the 'home dialysis' section, but the short version is that he has had two cases of peritonitis in only 4 months, the same not very common bug - basically it never went away the first time.  We can either try 6 weeks of antibiotics and risk destroying his peritoneum, or have the catheter removed and replaced entirely.  The docs have made it pretty clear they are just guessing at everything, so I am looking for anything and everything anyone might have for thoughts on this.

I really enjoy this site, thanks to all.

Off to post the long version :)

Rockhounds welcome to IHD.  I'm so glad you found us.  I read your long version first.  Not much of a choice.  Both have risks.  I guess I'd want to work and take the antibiotics.  If the site looks good then that would make me think the catheter was clean.  I guess just pick one and try it.

Best of luck and welcome to IHD.           :welcomesign;

Rockhounds, thank you for posting both versions.  I hope someone can share their wisdom with you.  I am glad you joined us and think it is great that you are looking for answers for your husband.  It is a tough disease, but it helps to have family who are supportive.  Keep asking questions--someone will have an answer for you.  Welcome to IHD!  Let us know how your husband is doing.

Hi Rockhounds and I also welcome you to IHD.  So glad you de-lurked and joined in.  I read your detailed post also and agree, what a tough spot to be in.  My 2 cents would be to replace the catheter first.  The risks of scarring the peritoneum are pretty high and that can't be reversed.  But, that's just my opinion.

Whichever way you go, I hope it works out for you.  I'll be thinking of you and hope to see you posting on the boards.   :welcomesign;
