Title: Kidney Cakes
Post by: okarol on April 10, 2010, 09:55:41 PM
You've probably seen the cakes we made for the last 3 years to celebrate Jenna's kidneyversary. It doesn't look like she will make it to year 4, but the cakes made me happy, celebrating the transplant and cheering for Jenna's living donor Patrice. I include those photos here, and I also have found some others so will share them as well.

This was made by madras650 for a kidney transplant party. Pretty colorful, but not too appetizing with the urine puddle...  :P

Pretty cute with a party hat!
Written by Tresa:
For those of you who don't know the story...My sister gave me a kidney 14 years ago all was well until the anti rejection medicine damaged it. So here I was once again looking at having to be hooked up to a dialysis machine 3 days a week. My brother Johnny desperately wanted to give me one of his, but we weren't a match. So we talked to my doctor about the Paired Donations program....and 6 months later we became the first Paired Donations in Oklahoma. My brother gave Susan a kidney and Ross, Susan's husband gave me one of his. We had no idea of who's kidney I was receiving or who was getting my brothers. All we were told was it's a very healthy kidney. 3 days after the transplants took place we met for the first time. Here is a link to our story http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwaoXaOnnZM

Kidney Cake

I made this cake for a very special woman that I work with. On Tuesday, 12-7 she will be donating a kidney to her sister, who is currently on dialysis three times a week. Tomorrow is her last day at work before the surgery, and we are having a little party for her. They designed Tshirts to raise money for the unpaid medical expenses, and we are all wearing one on the day of surgery to support the sisters. My cake is based on the design of the shirt. "Fletcher" is what the girls nicknamed the kidney. It is made from RKT, covered in MMF. The rest is BC. TFL!

Another.
Caption reads:
And, of course, what Kidney Shower is complete without a Kidney CAKE!? I waffled between a real to life veiny organ cake or something a little cuter. In the end, I figured I'd go for the easier thing to visually eat. And it was a hit!

Kidney Transplant Celebration
Uploaded By: saptally
This was made to celebrate a successful kidney transplant. It is a lemon cake covered in buttercream. I used red, blue, white and pink fondant to make the veins and details. This was by far the most unusual cake I've been asked to create but didn't take as long as I thought it would.

After Jenna's kidney rejection last year, I thought her kidney was a goner, but it has lasted 18 months since, still working!
Here's the cake we had for her 4th kidneyversary in Jan. 2011 (I know I posted it elsewhere but might as well put it with the rest of the cakes!)

Text accompanying the photo:
Yeeaaahhh.... well, the little boy's nickname is "Bean", so they wanted a kidney bean cake..uh huh! :) This is what I came up with...Anyway, It is White cake cake with chocolate chips. Hand Carved...its about 10" tall and 7" wide, covered in MMF. The mini cake is cake also. Hand painted fondant covered board. Accents are MMF. Took picture a little off center so you can see a little more of the bean's face :) LOL

What is MMF? M&M's Foundations? I'm sure it's not buttercreme.
Title: Re: Kidney Cakes
Post by: okarol on July 06, 2011, 12:28:22 AM
 :rofl;
I looked it up. It's the kind of sugar/icing stuff you can mold and shape.
MMF means Marshmallow Fondant (MMF) and it's ingredients consist of white marshmallows, water, icing sugar (confectioners’ or powdered sugar).

That seems richer than buttercreme, or just to much sugar for my taste. But you know I will eat cake! ;D

Oooh, I likey this thread.  Last week I ordered a cake for October.  I wanted to do something fun because we'll be in hospital (or Blokey will, hopefully I'll be discharged) on our fifth wedding anniversary. I've ordered our KidneyKake from the same little outfit that made our wedding cake, mostly because everybody said it was divine and I think I'm the only person who didn't get to try any of it.  Once the guests had munched on it, I think the hotel chose to snaffle a HUGE slice (or thirty) for themselves.

Hopefully it will live up to my expectations; I spent a whole day researching and designing it.  It's quirky and fun and will be a surprise for Blokey and I must remember to take pics of it before the doctors and nurses get their grubby little mitts on it.

 ;D
