Title: our dialysis center needs call lites
Post by: sullidog on April 10, 2010, 11:37:22 AM
I don't understand why dialysis centers don't have call lites like hospitals do, especially when you have lazy staff like mine does. The other day I needed sojme help and after yelling for someone and yelling, no one came to help me, they just sat there at their desk like they were busy. Their response was sorry we are short staffed so we can't always help, oh yeah? I could of been crashing! I am in the process of finding a new center anyways, I've just had it with these bums at my center that act like we are too much for them!

Yikes, that is terrible. Hope you find a new center and soon. No sense being unhappy that length of time you are there.

Short staffed? Do you get a refund on the amount charged for dialysis? No.
Maybe try one of these http://www.cabelas.com/link-12/product/0037806018252a.shtml
That'll keep them running.  :rofl;
Sorry, I hope you do find a better place.  :cuddle;

I spent over 2 months in the hospital - call lites are no guarantee, either!

Wonder if I should stop at Cabelas and get one of those for my week in the hospital. . . :rofl;

Sullidog,

Unfortunately, that is common in many centers. I really dont think call lites would work either as even in hospitals I have waited over 10 minutes for an answer. What if this happened to be an emergency....Its the staff that is not trained right.
When I was in center, the nurse to patient ratio was 1 nurse for 8 patients. Therefore during a night shift, there would only be 2 nurses and 1 or 2 techs at most. This is certainly not enouph. 3 would take dinner breaks at the same time thus leaving 1 on the floor whom you rarely saw.

This is why I love my NxStage and Home Dialysis. I am on my own terms and schedule. If you are able, you should check into home treatments if you have a capable partner.....

Kink your blood line.  It alarms the machine.

My husband just said "Who needs Life Alert?"
Put an airhorn around grandma's neck as a personal medical emergency alarm. Heheheh.

When I was in the hospital I had used the call lite, but no one came. My hubby got pissed and asked the nurses standing the hallway: Can you please help my wife, since you're just standing around int he hallway? They jumped.

Take a cell phone. If you don't get help, call the center. If there is a menu, choose the charge nurse. ;)

Love the air horn idea though.

I took my turkey call in one day, they asked that I didn't bring it ever again.

 I know what you mean.  When I was on hemo for 6 months, I used my cell phone to call the receptionist and asked her to send me a technician because my alarm had been ringing for over 20 minutes!  Sure am glad I'm back on PD.  At least "I" care about me!!!

I have a habit of calling now. Even when I'm waiting I call just so they can tell them I'm here.
By the way I did buy that airhorn but haven't taken it to dialysis.

in my centre, we only have 9 chairs, so it's not usualy hard to get someone's attention, unless you're in the isolation room, cuz it's the farthest away from the desk.  There is a call bell in there, though, it's been hit a couple of times by accident.  Everybody jumps. it's funny.

I don't like yelling when I need something, so I try to wait till someone walks by to ask for whatever I need.  I tend to sleep anyway, so as long as my bp isn't dropping, they don't bother me

Jenna's center had 50 chairs with about 7 techs and one charge nurse. A call bell would have been good.

 :) Or this

wow! just how big a center are we talking about here? mine holds 28, sometimes they are all full. others times its half full. but  there are 3 stations   2 are in the middle of the room on each end. ( they sit in fount of me) and the main desk in the middle with the phones and computers....  I also can see the break room door for the staff that seems to always  be busy with them going in and out of it, LOL
