DH just had his monthly clinic appt (Davita) , his nurse handed over an instruction sheet with new guidelines for prepping his fistula:
Wash hands
Face Mask
Glove
Alcohol wipe x4 (4 swipes to each buttonhole, new pad with each swipe)
ExSept x 1 (1 gauze pad saturated with solution per buttonhole)
Pick scabs with steripick
Change gloves
Alcohol x4
Exsept x1
Cannulate
tape
what the heck is the point of swiping each site four times?? Would it really make a difference if he uses one alcohol wipe over four of them??
We also laughed and made some smart aleck remarks (to ourselves) when he had to sign a form stating he wouldn't cover his dialysis arm during treatment so "staff" can make sure he wasn't bleeding out. Obviously it's a Davita thing to CYA, but not appropriate for home use. They really need to change paperwork to reflect home usage.
Are the Davita police going to come to our home during treatment and tsk tsk all the rule breaking? :shy; :rofl;
Swipe.. not bulls eye or circular motion is what we were told for the alcohol wipes. Bulls eye makes tons more sense.

Every center is different. Some more proactive than others.
I have been to 3 centers, and each have their own methods. The following is my current centers procedures.....
Fistula Preparation before Treatment (http://www.nxstageusers.com/filedir/FistulaPrep.pdf)
In my opinion, you cannot over clean your fistula. This is our lifeline and we need to do everything we can do protect it...
