Title: I HATE THIS!$%^^
Post by: melody on March 22, 2010, 05:00:03 PM
Muscle weakness is really bad today. I can barely type. I slipped out of my office chair today while trying to get up and couldn't get back up without help.

Usually I can lean onto my walker to help myself get up but not today. :(

I left work early since it just seems to be getting worse as the day progresses. Driving was scary since I had to use my arms to move my leg from the gas pedal to the brakes. :(

Stepping up onto my porch was hell. :( Took me 10 minutes to go up two steps, even with my walker's help.

I HATE THIS! I'm finally inside the house and just bawling. I'm so frustrated. :(

And yesterday, I felt great. :( Today, I'm just miserable. :(

Awww man that sounds awful. Driving like that must be terrifying - isn't there anyone who can give you a ride? What is different today? I hope you get some rest and check your labs. Please call your family or friends and let them know, maybe to check on you later?  :cuddle;

I too am wondering if there is a particular difference in anything different from yesterday. That being said, I see how each day can be a totally different day for my husband. Usually it's nothing he's done different but just the way it goes unfortunately. Is the muscle weakness coming with any cramping also? Maybe from exhaustion? Oh it's so hard to say. Having dialysis sure takes a lot of of you. Being dehydrated can cause some muscle fatigue. I know you probably are on a restricted fluid intake but you don't want to remain dehydrated. Finding that balance is crazy. I DO hope tomorrow is much better for you. I wish I had a magic pill that could make you feel better instantly.

Melody, have you had your parathyroid checked lately?  That could be the cause.  I know it is for mine.

What causes your muscle weakness?  Six years ago, at 18% GFR, my neph prescribed Zocor for my high cholesterol.  One month to the day later, I was put in the hospital with rhabdomyolisis.  The only symptom was incredible muscle weakness, as the body starts consuming muscles to keep going.  If you already know the cause of your muscle weakness, ignore this post.

There are lots of causes of muscular weakness, unfortunately with  no medical history on you we really can't help much except tell you what possible causes there are so you can talk to your doctor about which one it may be. In addition to the cholesterol lowering meds that were already mentioned in this thread, you might want to look into how your potassium levels are as that can cause muscle weakness as well.

It was really odd. It kept on getting worse till about 8:30pm, when it started getting better. I had eaten some candy at that point, so I wonder if it is somehow related to my glucose, but when I had checked that earlier, it was quite normal.

It's really disconcerting though. I know because of it, I keep on falling.

(just fell again about half an hour ago and now I'm resting on my bed since I twisted my ankle again)

sigh

For me, high potassium does that. Well to be fair that's just one of the things that steal my strength. Like others have said, with CKD, there are a lot of things that can cause your symptoms. I will throw in anemia too.

If your hartbeat has changed, sped up, slowed down, irregular, get to the hospital. Don't mess around. If your potassium gets too high, your heart will stop.

Have you had you albumin checked...low protein can cause muscle weakness.
