Received a call from my transplant nurse today.
Thursday April the 8th is the day my father will donate a kidney to me.
Get admitted to hospital the day before.
So just over 3 weeks away.
Have some blood test done the week before.
No more Baxter deliveries, as i have enough to last until then.
I think i am as ready as i will ever be and thanks to everyone on IHD have a fair idea of what i am in for.
Wish me luck.

Well everyone, i now officially have 3 kidneys!
It all went as planned. Had my first lot of immune suppressants on Wednesday night then my last pd run which left me dry. I felt really off before surgery, sooo empty.
Dad is doing well. He was wheeled into my room today in a wheelchair. I was up walking around but not allowed out. The docs/surgeons were really happy with the kidney. Got my tenckoff removed at the same time, yay!
Im 10kg heavier than yesterday and have some odd swelling, hope this goes down as its really uncomfortable. Other than that i feel good.
Thats it for now. Typing on the mobile sucks.
-
OMG!! I'm super thrilled for you, and suuuuper thrilled i know how you are doing too :yahoo; [Was so excited when i saw this thread updated, :lol;]
Glad to hear your Dads doing well too.
As you know, thinking of you ..
:-*

Fabulous news...I can relate to the swelling due to water weight but the "odd" swelling you refer to is, I'm guessing here, of some body bits that us girls are not dragging around with us. :o
-
How many ways can I say "wonderful"!? :clap;
-
Good stuff!!
-
absolutely awesome mate!! Great news that both you and your dad are doing well. Hope you have many many years of happy times with your dad's kidney!!!! Fantastic! :2thumbsup; :2thumbsup;

Yeah Gail you were right.
Well i got home lastnight, 5 days post op and feeling good beside the fluid. Still 6.7kg over my pre op dry weight.
Yesterday my creatinine was down to 117 and urea 6.7. My phos has been low so may have to start a supplement for that.
Cant wait for the fluid to go and the drugs to settle down.
Here's a few pics.
!. Dad and myself the day before the op.
2. Pee bag, sorry guys didnt get golden before cath was removed.
3. Dad and myself post op, day after surgery.
-
I had My transplant Mar. 23 and three days later My creatinine was 132 and I was 6kg above My pre op dry weight. 19 days later my creatinine is the same and My weight is 2kg below my pre op dry weight. Sounds like your doing great. Best wishes.
Ed :clap;

-
so fantastic - I'm so rapt it's a success so far and you are home inside a week - drink something cold for me!!! :)
-
PS: with the low phos... have PIZZA!!! lol. extra cheese! :rofl;
-
This is so fantastic! (Sorry I'm late; I rarely venture into the transplant bit!)
Love the photos!
Hope you're doing well.
;D
-
Thanks everyone. Dad had a couple beers lastnight so doing very well.
My creatinine is 97 a week out from surgery. Only a couple kg's over my pre op weight now so feeling really good.
The other night i only had 4 and half hours sleep and woke up fresh as a daisy on 'D' i'd get way more and still be tired, it's unreal.
-
Hey, just found your thread!!!!
Congrats Brad.
Don't you just love those stockings? i got into so much trouble because i'd get really hot (cause of the ATG and the Tac) and kick them off.
So glad you're doing great!!!
-
ok now I'm starting to get jealous!!! Or maybe it's just envy. :rofl;
sounds so awesome!!! I want that 'fresh as a daisy' feeling too!!! Perhaps I need to shower more? :rofl;
-
Glad to hear you and your Dad are recovering well - yay!! :clap; :clap; :clap;
-
Congrats to both of you, I am happy you both are recovering well. :flower; :cheer:
-
Thanks.
3 weeks out from the op and feeling really good.
Next to nil side effects, on 25mg of pred in the morn, 210mg cyclosporin morn and night then 1000mg cellcept morn and night.
All up more than 30 pills a day at the moment.
So great being off "D". I have had a faultless run so far.
I think my daily transplant clinic visits will be decreased after 4 weeks. As that part is becoming a bit of a drag.
Anyways thats it for now.
Ps Dad is doing great
-
Excellent news, sico.
-
How wonderful that you get a whole new lease on life! And your dad must be ecstatic to be able to help his son in this way; he's a hero. What has been the best thing that has happened so far since your op? What have you most enjoyed? A previously forbidden food? More energy? Freedom?
Congratulations...we are all so very pleased for you! Please come back often and tell us how you and your dad are doing. Such good news is always so welcomed! :beer1; (You can have beer now!)
-
Great to hear from you Brad. Been wondering i must admit!
-
So glad you are both doing so well. You give us all hope :2thumbsup;
-
So happy about this (and yes, a tinge envious it must be said!). You must be relishing the energy, more normal diet and fluid intake allowed and all that, getting back on your bike and LIVING that all this is bringing. Yes, I am sure the clinic visits are a drag, but way less of a drag than hooking up to that machine every night I bet!
Keep up the good work - both you and dad!
-
How wonderful your dad is and how he must love you to do this for you!
I wish you and your new kidney many happy years together! Enjoy all the freedom it brings!

Thought I'd wonder onto IHD and post an update.
Seen the Nephrologist last week, 14 months since the transplant and everything is going fine.
Blood levels all within range and creatinine at 115. No hiccups at all or hints of rejection have I experienced to date.
So really I have been blessed.
Current medication;
5mg Prednisolone morning
50mg Metoprolol morning
1000mg Mycophenolate morning & night
120mg Ciclosporin morning & night
Sure beats plugging into a machine :)
-
:2thumbsup;
Good to hear from you.
thanks for the update. :thx;
-
so good to hear!! glad ya shared and brought a little happy to us :) Live on :flower;

Good news on the results sico - that's awesome.
Interesting you're still on a pretty high level of cyclosporin. One of my docs said that at 75mg 2/day I was on a highish dose for 6 months post and they were thinking about dropping it to 50, but they haven't yet. I guess it just underlines we're all different. Whatever works huh? 115 is awesome!! :bow; :beer1;

Yeah I know Rich, I was expecting to be on a lower cyclo dose by now. But the Docs are going by the level thats in my blood. I think everyones body excretes them differently and hospitals might have different protocols on levels and where they should be at a set amount of months post transplant. I've been on 120mg for so long now.
Next time I'm at the clinic I'll note what the level is, I think last time it was 400 or 500 in my blood. Not too sure....
-
yeah those 2 hour post blood levels are important to keep in check - two high and it can damage the kidney... too low and you risk rejection - what joy! I've been stuck on 75mg twice daily for ages now the levels just stay around where they want it. I don't bother to ask anymore. I seem to handle the 75 ok - I've even lost most of the shakes, which was the worst symptom I got, though it does rear its ugly head from time to time.
As with all these things it's a balancing act and like you say everyone's body is different.
As long as your tx is doing OK that's the main thing!!

So on my 34th birthday I visited my Renal Clinic, my creatinine is at 107.
Not back there for 3 months now, got a big bag of drugs so all sweet for a while...lol
-
Glad to hear that you are doing well. My turn will be on September 9. A really close friend of mine is donating. Are there any serious side effects of the medication that you are taking? Can you give me any pointers on the proceedure?
-
Most of the drugs tx patients take have an assortment of possible side effects. Serious is in the eye of the beholder. Also, every body is different so you just never know. With the assortment of things you will be taking after transplant tracking down which drug or supplement is responsible for a given side effect can be a process . There are a lot of threads on this site discussing different side effects. The bottom line is that for the great majority of transplant patients the side effects are a minor blip compared to the miracle of a healthy kidney.
Godspeed
Ed

you should be given plenty of reading material after your transplant

107 mate? that's awesome!! 3 months?!?! even more awesome!! LOL. I'm still at 3 weeks haha
-
Well thought I'd jump on here as it's been quite a while.
Today is the 4th anniversary of my transplant and it has performed faultlessly.
My last creatinine reading was around 114(aus reading).
Dad is doing well and I am too. So hoping to get lots more D free years.

Congrats!
