Title: lou is having it done
Post by: lou on March 02, 2010, 06:49:17 AM
hello i hate dialysis

this is Lou's boy friend Shawn and if your local news station or news paper has pickup on the fact that we had a phone call last night from the hospital then you we need to read this.

last night when in the middle of watching a crap film when our phone rang about 9.30pm. now Lou told me not to answer it , think she was into the film , now i thought it was really bad so picked up the phone and and passed it over to Lou. 5 mins later we were on the motor way on the way to the hospital.

after a few problems they wheeled her off 11.30 am the next morning to plumb her up.

she is the theater now and i am in a pub having a burger and a corona letting you lot know.

now this web site has been a big deal for Lou over the last few tricky months and would like to thank her new friends and hope you all send her loads of messages and get well soons.  :beer1;  :2thumbsup;

ps zog dont hold your breath

transplant stuff is so confusing my fiance and i are just getting in to this stuff and already it really confusing. he doesn't want a kidney until he gets ill but it doesn't exactly work that way! he's 34 so he hopefully had alot of year agead of him and everyone want him to get a transplant. although now we have him all excited about doing a kidney and pancreas transplant (he's diabetic, and a pancreas transplant would hopefully end that) so hopefully we can begin the long, confusing a terrifying journey down the transplant road.

oh and he also refuses to take my damn kidney!  *most offended* :Kit n Stik;

i don't know how but i totally replyed this to the wrong post!!! sorry!

VictoriaG,

My wife is type O and I am type A.  She tells me that she doesn't want to go through the hassle of a chain donation with my kidney because of the burden it would put on me and the other couple for a kidney that may last her a thousand days.  (That seems to be her track record.)  After the emotional trauma of loosing her mother's kidney she probably became content with waiting for a cadaveric kidney.  We are pretty comfortable with waiting.

She's kind of like a mother who had 3 kids die and they ask her if she wants to have another kid.

I don't know what your fiance is thinking, but deciding to receive a kidney from someone is as difficult a decision as donating one.

well im not entirely sure what he is thinking either but for some reason he seems really uncomfortable with the very idea of getting any transplant. we're going to a transplant orientation soon which should help answer the ten million questions we have.

but of course if we have the option we would prefer to wait on a donor... which is where i am torn because i really don't think i could hope and pray for a transplant when we all know how alot of transplants become available... :(

and whenever he has surgery i am a WRECK!!!

I was pretty worried when Jenn got her 3rd transplant.  We had not been dating that long.  The thought of her being cut open and spending a week in the hospital was scary to me.  However, Jenn on the other hand was skipping down the sidewalk to tell me she was getting a transplant and was very excited and all smiles.  She got her 3rd one from some young person in Arizona who died for reasons we don't know.  We are glad Jenn got one of the kidneys.  It was flown to North Carolina and everything happened real fast.  It gave us 3 years we didn't have to do dialysis.  Transplants are about as close to normal as you can get after losing your kidneys.  We can wait... but we will be excited when we get transplant number 4.  My wife is only 28.  Transplant #4 will happen.  She isn't dying anytime soon.

Hope you are doing well Lou!  Fill that bag/cup with pee!

Thanks for messages everyone.  :2thumbsup; Got home last night and is soooo great to be home. Think things are going ok but night of transplant was pretty stressful to be honest. The kidney came from London to Bristol but was not packed properly so by the time it got to Bristol two thirds of the ice around it had melted.  :Kit n Stik; The transplant team were furious about it and said it had damaged part of the kidney. They took the kidney for a biopsy and then said it was my call if i still wanted to go ahead with the transplant even with the damage. I was a bit hysterical by then and said i would trust their opinion. In the end they said because the kidney was such a good match (it was a 010) and they thought the part that was damaged might repair itself they thought it was worth going for.

The night after surgery was also pretty scary as they woke me up at 3 to say my potassium had gone crazy high and i needed to go and do some hemo (always been terrified of this as was on pd).

Anyway they said it might take a while to kick in so was sooo excited the next day when  creat went down to 450! (was 550 on dialysis). Has kept going down each day but has now stopped at about 170. It went a bit crazy a few days ago but they did another biopsy and said it looked normal. Just been for bloods again this morn so have everything crossed they come back ok and wont have to go back into hospital.

Still all feels a bit surreal to be honest but just feel so happy and grateful its happened. Anyway loads of love to you all and will update again soon x x x

Good stuff Lou. So far so good and good on you for trusting the decision of the medical team. I am not sure how I would react - that would be SO stressful for you to try and decide. When I think about it though I would probably say the same thing. Still, that's not the sort of thing that you need.

All the best in your recovery and getting on with LIFE !!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the best news I've had all week-end. Congratulations on the new kidney and I'm hoping for a quick recovery. A 5/6 match is very good.

Just a quick update....

Been home a week now and already feeling much better. Trying not to get too excited as I know its early days but my bloods today showed my creatinine has gone down to 131!!!!!! WOW - I don't think its ever been that low!  :bandance;

The other thing which I am getting excited about and keep telling all my friends (which they think is very strange) is the difference in my wee! It used to look like water when I was on dialysis and now when I go its properly yellow... like I guess wee should really look like....

Anyway I just have everthing crossed it carries on this well, but all the nurses keep warning me not to get too comfortable yet, so we'll see.

Still not doing much everyday, just reading lots and watching films but started trying to plan a trip for my 30th this summer. Am hoping to go to Paris for two nights! :yahoo; Really exciting as wasn't massively looking forward to my big bday this year!

Love to all of you x x
