DaVita CEO recounts company turnaround

DaVita Inc.’s announcement last May that it would move its headquarters from the Los Angeles area to Denver was considered a major coup for a metropolitan area that lost many of its flagship enterprises through acquisitions in recent years.
But the Fortune 500 company wasn’t always held in such high esteem. And in 1999, the kidney care company was teetering on the brink of bankruptcy and faced myriad problems.
Ultimately, DaVita survived and is poised for bigger growth. The company, which employs 32,000 people in about 1,800 locations nationwide, specializes in hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, home hemodialysis, vascular access management, chronic kidney disease education and renal diet assistance.
In a Feb. 2 interview, Davita’s chairman and CEO, Kent Thiry, talked about DaVita’s turnaround and what lies ahead for the company.
