Has anyone experienced leakage of pd fluid from the exit site of the pd catheter? My son is having a bit at the moment, i have spoken to the hospital and they slightly reduced his program, but I'm trying to understand how serious this is. Please let me know if you have any more information about this...

Hi Koutsotnel. My husband is a PD patient. He has never had this from the exit site and I also would be concerned. Has he been on PD long?

my son has been on PD since he was a baby, for 18 months we had no problems (serious ones), until a skin infection on the exit site went inside and caused peritonitis. The catheter came out, he went on heamo for a while, but being a toddler this was unsuitable (he wouldn't sit in the chair and lost two necklines in less than 3 weeks) so they put him back on PD. They started on a low program, but we had problems with the bloods, especially the potassium, so they increased him to his full program quicker than they would have liked, and now we have this small leakage. I still haven't got a clear picture from the hospital as to how serious this could be - if he could loose his catheter for this reason, and that's why I would like to know if anyone else has any more info about it...

It sure sounds like something I would be concerned about. If fluid can get out, it would seem that bacteria could get in.

It depends how much ? I did pd for 5 yrs and always had a tiny amount of leakage, every time i cleaned my exit site it was like a sticky small scab there , which i was told was pd fluid and a bit of blood mixed together and dried out, but i never had an infection or anything in 5 yrs either !

unfortunately you were right, we got peritonitis. I quoted you at the hospital, and they told me that this is the case, if fluid can get out, bacteria can get in.... I just wish they had explained more beforehand...
