Title: Parathyroid scan
Post by: del on January 25, 2010, 01:45:48 PM
Walt has to have a parathyroid scan. Anyone ever have one and what is involved? Any one know of anyone having any side effects or reactions to the radioactive injection they give you?  He is very nervous about anything like this!!

Del,
When I had that kidney scan a couple months ago they injected the radioactive dye. I didn't feel a thing (except the needle and it isn't as big as a dialysis needle). I was really surprised at how easy it was.

I also looked up information about it on-line. I'm sure you could find something out about it.

I goggled it and found out some info. Sounds like nothing to it. I have had the tests done on my kidneys too where they inject the dye. Nothng to it. I just felt like someone put a blanket on me and made me warm.  He's becoming more of a worry wart than ever.I'll have to take the  :Kit n Stik; to get him there!!

Hi,
I just recently had the parathyroid scan done.  The dye is injected and it tastes horrible, but that only lasts a few minutes.  Then you sit for a little while before having some "pictures" taken.  Then you sit for a couple hours (well 1.5-ish) before having some more "pictures" taken.  The pictures themselves are the worst part because you have to lay still.  The first set doesnt take very long, but the second set is 30-45 minutes.  At least that was how my scan went.

Are you going to be having the surgery to have your parathyroids removed too?

Hope this helps!

I had to have this done too and agree with JD.  The worst part is having to lay still for so long.  Out of the 4 glands only 1 of mine was bad so I had it removed.  Surgery wasn't real bad either.  Good luck.

Not sure about surgery-it depends on the results of the scan. they may treat it with sensipar. Here they won't prescribe sensipar unless PTH is over 1000.  Walt's last test was 800. When he was doing in center it went up to over 1000. Was down to 300 but has gone back up.

Del, Carl's PTH has fallen below 300 with combined Sensipar and Hectoral. The Sensipar alone didn't do it.

Good luck with this.
