Title: What's your favorite Science Fiction Movie or TV show?
Post by: fc2821 on January 25, 2010, 06:42:46 AM
I got to thinking, we can't be serious all the time.  We can't just think about our health problems all the time.  And, it appears many of us like science fiction movies and TV programs.  So, I thought I'd ask:  What Is your favorite science Fiction TV program or movie?   It can be an old one that is out dated now, but you like it,  such as "Destination Moon" or it can be a new one.
Before Kitkatz gets in here and beats me to it  :rofl; :rofl;,  mine is the Babylon 5 TV series.  The best written show on television, I think and well acted too.  Liked the way the whole story unfolded, evolved  as it went along.
That's mine, what's yours?   It can be the same or something different.

Where to begin??

Movie, well I really enjoyed Avatar for the visual feast, even if the story line was predictable.

Series: Firefly, Stargate (any of them, but really into Universe).

I don't know about movie that is a hard one. But the new Star Treck is pretty high up there on the list.  I will admit I do like some Star Wars too, not sure if I would pick the first three or last three as the better set tho. Last three just cause I am a girl and they have better love secanes. I grew up watching just tons and tons of sifi with my dad, so I have lots of stuff I enjoy.

As for shows, I am drawing a blank so I am gonna need to get back to you on that one.

Loved the original Stargate.  Don't have cable anymore, so haven't seen any of the new one.

Have a harder time picking a movie - I rarely go to them.  Not a huge Trek fan, so haven't seen most of the movies, even when they were old enough to come out on TV.  I prefer my sci-fi with a sense of humor, so more likely to watch Men in Black than something serious.

I loved the series Firefly and the movie follow-up Serenity.  Too bad it didn't continue.

Favorite movie - probably Serenity

Favorite series - Firefly, original Stargate, all the Star Treks

Haven't seen a movie in the theatre in probably 8 years.  I get tired of seeing sex in movies that don't need it!

Favourite Sci-Fi tellybox programme?  Hmmm ... Doctor Who.  Does that count?  It's not as intellectually stimulating as shows such as Babylon 5 and Stargate, but it's jolly good 'hiding behind the cushions' fun.

Film?  Donnie Darko.  Or ET.

My Blokey lurves Blade Runner and has made me watch it twice. It's nothing special *shrugs*.  Although, the quote, "All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain. Time to die," is probably my favourite quote.  Why?  I don't know.

Movie, well I really enjoyed Avatar for the visual feast, even if the story line was predictable.
Me too!

For me it has to be Dark Star. Made in the 70's for $55,000.

Great film by John Carpenter, even though cheap. It's about a completely pissed-off space crew whose job is to blow up unstable planets. One of the "thermostellar" bombs (which talks) goes wrong and threatens to explode. A crew member goes out to reason with the bomb but merely succeeds in making it think it's god. So the bomb says "Let there be light" and explodes.

Tough one.  2001: A Space Odyssey has always been a favorite but I saw the original Star Wars on opening night and remember being so blown away by it that we snuck into the second showing of it that same night.

Firefly!!! (Nathan Fillion.... WOW, did you see him to his 'space cowboy' halloween thing in Castle? so funny!)
I love stargate, Atlantis is my favourite ( i wish they'd hurry up and make the movie!) but getting  into sgu as well. (if anyone loves SG1, watch the first episode of Atlantis where carter takes over, in her room is a photo of Jack)
I also like Babylon 5, the later movies were ok.
Also love farscape, Pitch Black (but chronicles of Riddick weren't that great. Saw Pitch Black at the cinema's when it came out, soo much better than on TV), Dr Who (David Tenant would have to be the best Dr Who, not too sure how the new one will go. New season starts here soon).
I pretty much love any SciFi/Fantasy book/movie/show. Hubs laughs at me cause i really get into SciFi, he hates it. But I grew up watching SciFi with dad (he also imparted his weird sense of humour to me as well.... Goodies, Monty Python and Blackadder).
I also started getting into defying gravity then found out the USA had already pulled it.

Stoday, I mentined my favorite Tv show but didn't mention film. This is it. It is so obscure though, wasn't sure anyone would know it.  You got to like "the alien" and Sgt Penderback.  :rofl; :rofl; :rofl; :rofl;  This one works on many levels, funny and thought prevoking. I like most John Carpenter films, but this is the best.

Jenny, saw that episode of Castle. We watch that show every week. My wife had never seen Firefly and didn't get it, but I was LMAO during that scene. Especially when he was asked if wore that costume "a couple of years ago".

"All of them."

Really, I feel about scifi like some people feel about pizza - the worst one in the world is pretty damn good!

Babylon 5, of course.  Firefly/Serenity, well, duh.  :)

Doctor Who...as a teenager, a friend of mine told me about Who.  It used to run on public television in America.  The first Doctor I saw was Tom Baker...how could you not be hooked??

My favorite sf movie of all time, though, definitely has to be GalaxyQuest.  It was good scifi, good satire, and any movie that prominently features the liquid tones of Alan Rickman is a winner in my book.

I love the "in-jokes" - Carter talking about "MacGyvering" a solution to a missing DHD. . .

And Colin on Bones getting tickets to Avatar. . .

Ah, Tom Baker was my first experience of The Doctor (I was born in the mid-seventies) so he'll always have a special place in my heart.  I quite liked Christopher Eccleston as The Doctor as well, but I'm not sure if that's more because I developed a crush on the actor!  I remember Peter Davison and Sylvester McCoy best from my childhood though.

I also remember having a 'thing' for the Master as a child.  Then when they reintroduced the character in the contemporary series' I developed another 'thing' for him.  There's something about naughty misunderstood men that attracts me ...  ;D

Definitely a Dr Who fan here - and my fav Dr Who is Also David Tennant - or 'ten inch' as the pretty blonde woman used to call him apparently.
And being a child born in 63, I think nothing will outdo watching Star Wars when it came out - those big words and ship so big on the screen and the sound!!!  Oh wow.  Don't really watch Sci fi TV shows now-  but looking forward to Avatar too.

or the Bachelor (science fiction that all those women really want him)

Sorry.  I intruded as I'm not a Science Fiction fan... (unless Batman movies count)

I remember two Science Fiction movies:

The first one is called "Village of the Damned" (1960 film)
British Science Fiction film about Telepathy by Wolf Rilla,
adapted from the novel "The Midwich Cuckoos" by John Wyndham.
Very very scary!

The second one is Orson Welles' film about his Radio Broadcast Oct. 30. 1938
called "War of the Worlds" & I believe the film I saw was called "The Night That America Trembled".
I am not sure if it is the right title, but the film was a "semi-documentary" about people's reaction
to the Radio "play" by Orson Welles and I remember a butler trying to tell his employers not to panic
because it was only a radio-play...but no one listened because they were all too busy panicking...
Unforgettable... and very very scary!

They were good, Kristina. Both stories originated from British authors. The Orson Wells' broadcast was made with the author, H G Wells.

I think the first story of that genre was by the American E A Poe in 1844. He wrote a short story "The Balloon Hoax" about a trip to Europe (from the States) by balloon, writing the story as newspaper reports. As with all the best hoaxes, there is an obvious flaw in it so that everyone who keep their head can confirm that it's a hoax.

Just in case you want to read the story and see if you can see the flaw I'll write it in white like the background so you have to pull the cursor over it to read it: [ As the balloon travels at speed across the Atlantic, Poe says that the rope dangling from the basket is blown along almost horizontally by the slipstream. A balloon would not, of course, have a slipstream!  ]

Thanks for the information!

I very much like the suspense stories by Edgar Allan Poe...

...and the crime novels by Agatha Christie...

wow rocker.. why are you already married? I think I love you!  :bow; :bow; :bow; :-* :-* :-*

I like a lot of Sci-Fi. Standouts would be B5(of course), parts of Trek, BSG (old and new), Quantum Leap, Space: 1999, Blake's 7 (they are redoing this apparently?!?!), Survivors (old and new) and of course Doctor Who. Like Hanify we in oz have a bias towards UK programmes, and they actually over the years have done a number of quality Sci-Fi series - everything from DW to Day of the Triffids, Red Dwarf, Blake's 7, Tomorrow People(for kids) and bunches of others. They just seem to "get it" and come out with some really riveting stuff. They also do "end of the world" type stuff better than just about anyone - think "Threads" "Survivors" (both versions) "The Last Train" and many others.

As for favourite doctor - I'd have to say Jon Pertwee. He was such a dandy in his thrilly shirts and velvet smoking jackets, yet a older man of action. He had the original and best Master and well Jo Grant in a miniskirt? ooh baby!  :rofl;

Of course I was a child of the 70's so I remember him and Tom Baker well. I also enjoyed Colin Baker's rather bizarre over the top/not quite stable Doctor and Sylvester McCoy's more alien and mysterious version (and again the miniskirt is back with Ace ;) Do you sense a theme???  :rofl;). Tennent has been a good doctor certainly and will be missed. Allons Y!

When it comes to movies, I will fall back on a classic I have liked since I was a kid, H.G. Wells Time Machine. The 60's version, not the newest version.
Title: Re: What's your favorite Science Fiction Movie or TV show?
Post by: RichardMEL on January 28, 2010, 10:46:57 PM
thanks Chris. I didn't really mention movies (I was distracted...)

Alien is a classic, and Aliens is a great second installment.. the next two.. well... yeah...

Time Machine is a classic movie, and for the time they did a good job in 1960. Agree the 2002(?) remake was poor (as with Planet of the Apes - the original was oh so much better). The 70's had some classic movies, even if you look back now and think "huh?" or "look at those pathetic effects" - I'm thinking here of films like Dark Star, Silent Running(an ecological message), Soylent Green (is people!) and even Logan's Run. Star Wars of course set the benchmark for such movies, and had many poor immitations(eg: Battle beyond the stars). The 80's saw most of the Trek movies of varying quality - The Wrath of Khan being the standout classic of the series. We also had the Back to the Future movies. Robocop another classic if you can handle the gore(very violent for 1987).

More recently some good movies have been Minority Report(despite Tom Cruise) and even the recent War of the Worlds(again Cruise) had some decent points to it(and some horrid ones).

Back to TV - throw in The Twilight Zone (original, not 80's) and Outer Limits (both versions have some good episodes), sliders and more recently Journeyman(RIP), Fringe, Chuck and even Dollhouse. Oh and of course The Big Bang Theory.

Richard,  some PBS stations ran Red Dwarf in the US.  I thought it was a great show.  I agree with you the orignal Twlight Zone is the best.
National Public Radio sttions ran the radio version of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".   It was great.   Didn't like the movie, never saw the TV show.

Currently I'm waiting to watch the next Doctor Who... although I think the science is very thin and the fiction is thick.

If LOST could qualify as science fiction, then that's my favorite.

My favorite as a teenager was Star Trek, The Next Generation.  There are a lot of themes in it that speak to dialysis patients.  Like the episode where Geordi's visor saves the planet with eugenics.  Data trying to be human even though he is a machine.  I guess you could look at going to clinic as plugging into the Borg collective.  "Prepare to be assimilated", nurse sticks needle in...   Sorry, I have a dark sense of humor.  One of my favorite STNG episodes is "The Offspring" where Data builds a daughter.  I thought of it some when we had our daughter.

Season One (all black & white) were some of the best stories.  And in the early episodes Dr. Smith was truly evil.
