Hello to all,
My name is Quin Brace and I am a nursing student that is having to do a paper on the day and life of a dialysis patient. I felt that just reading and researching would not do this assignment justice. I wanted to have a real persons imput on how the treatment has effected your mental health, family life and your physical health. I would be very greatful for any imput that anyone can provide on any of these topics. I did not want to just sit and read posts and take your stories without any of you knowing why I was here. I do not know anyone on dialysis and felt that my paper be the words from someone that has been there and can give a true account of the process. I am inviting the good the bad and the ugly side. So please feel free to tell it like it is and as my paper progresses I will keep all of you up to date on the paper and it's contents and quotes tat I have put in there. I will not use your words as mine but your words to build a paper from the patients to my professor. I must let you know that I haven't the first clue about the process, just how disease and genetics get you to this point. Once again thanks and keep up the smiles and my heart goes out to each and every one of you. The only thing I know is cancer seeign as how almost every female in my family has had or does have one form or another. I would not wish that or kidney disease on my worst enemy.
kisses and best wishes
Quin

I'll be glad to add my :twocents; from the perspective of a dialysis nurse if you like. I'm glad to hear that you're doing such an assignment, I know in my nursing school nephrology nursing was definitely a neglected topic.
I can tell you that it can be a very rewarding area of nursing.
You found a great board for some of your research; I'm sure the patients here will give you lots of good info.
Good luck!
DeLana
P.S. What term/quarter/semester are you in? ADN or BSN program?

I am going for my Associates. I was premed and had been accepted into DU med but I found out I was pregnant and I had to put that off. That was 5 years agao and so I have decided that I could not be one of those moms that has her career before her family so I am doing the nusing program and then I will be doing a NP prgram a little later. I have another bun in the oven due feb 13th the same day as my son's birthday. No that was not planned. I want to say thanks for everyone letting me jump in and read the posts, I did not want to do it on the "sly" per say. I have always had a thing for OB and Peds so this is a new area for me. I had another paper taht I had to do on a cardiac patient but that way easy since my father in law has a nasty hert condidtion and I knew all that jazz.
kisses to all

Just adding my piece and reinforcing what the others have said. I am sure that we have not problem with sharing our dialysis life (that's why we are on this message board) Just let us know what you want and we will do our best to help you.
We definitely like the idea of our perspective being important for once! ;D
Welcome to our message board. Hope you don't just stay for your project but that you will continue to be a part of our community. There is lots more here than just venting about dialysis.

Welcome Quin! You'll find alot of great information here. I am very glad they are including nephrology nursing in the curriculum - it wasn't even mentioned in mine but I'm a dinosaur - graduated BSN 1979! Nursing is far better than medicine in my opinion anyway!

i DO HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU ALL!! hOW HAS THE DIALYSIS EFFECTED YOUR OUTLOOK ON LIFE AND YOUR MOOD. i ALSO WANTED TO KNOW HOW MANY TIMES A WEEK DO ALL OF YOU HAVE DIALYSIS AND FOR HOW LONG EACH SESSION?
P.S. I WAS BORN N 79' ;D

Hi Quin, welcome to the board. There's a post already going on the general discussion about dialysis frequency and time - there's 42 replies already, so you should start there.
If you post in the same section with a new topic about the outlook and mood, you'll probably get plenty of answers.
I haven't started dialysis yet, (I've got a rant on here about that - check the home hemo discussion under "@#@#$## Doctor" if you want to know more.) but I'd have to say my outlook and mood vary from day to day. I try to be upbeat, but that's why I like this board - I'm allowed to be ticked off and moody around everyone on here, and they understand why.
I'm sure some of the long term survivors have a lot more to say about how it affects their outlook than I do.
And please, take off the caps lock. All capitals on a message board post is the virtual equivalent of SCREAMING! :thx;
