LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A former Lufkin DaVita nurse is asking for extra funding to pay for her defense for her upcoming capital murder trial.

What the judge decided is not known as he made the hearing a closed one to the public.

Prior to the judge's decision, Kimberly Saenz's attorney, Ryan Deaton, explained to District Judge Barry Bryan that Saenz could not get a job because of her suspect status. She is also separated from her husband, Deaton said.

Saenz is accused in the 2008 deaths of five kidney dialysis patients and the aggravated assault of five others. She is accused of injecting bleach into their bloodstream.

Deaton explained that he wanted to hire an engineer to help with explaining how a dialysis machine works and to test the state's theory of how bleach is used with the machine.

When Bryan asked how much Saenz had already paid her lawyer, Deaton requested the closed session.

"I don't want to be rude, but can we make this a closed hearing?" Deaton said.

I don't know if it is case closed because the problems with the Lufkin TX DaVita unit preceded employment of the arrested nurse.

AANNNNDDDD,  besides.  The use of bleach in the machine is nessecary, but does NOT include putting it into the bloodlines.  How stupid!  You are not to have bleach ANYWHERE near the machine unless there is no patient on it, for cleaning purposes.  It goes THROUGH the machine after the clinic is empty, and then gets a final rinse and heat disenfection.  Who are they kidding!  There can be no mixing that up...  :Kit n Stik;

We only know the details that have been released to the press - I would not make conclusions based on what was reported. It may be she is a crazy homicidal nurse but her being a crazy homicidal nurse doesn't explain all the deaths prior to her being hired. If nothing else her being a crazy homicidal nurse is an incomplete answer for the goings on at DaVita Lufkin.
