Title: How Much
Post by: murf on January 09, 2010, 06:16:18 PM
I have just started PD and at present I am losing about 2 and a half litres of fluid each day. I am wondering if that is "normal". What do others lose each day? TIA

When you say lose, do you mean UF Murf?

I have to UF around 800-1200ml per night to keep my weight stable.
Using a 2.5% bag and a 1.5% bag with the cycler most nights, sometimes 2x2.5% bags.

Losing 2.5 l fluid each day is a lot. A healthy person loses about 2 l a day on average. Unless you have a very big body, 2.5 l is a little more than the "normal". I have about 0.5 l UF each day and have about 1.5 l of urine daily. I use 1.5% solution only. If using 2.5% solution, my UF should be close 1.5 l.

What size bags are you using?  Do you need to drop a lot of fluid?  I ususally lose about 1200 - 1500 a day.

your bp and weight are the important things, don't worry about the uf too much. That is the great thing about pd, your body absorbs what it needs and gets off what it doesn't. If your bp in particular is not under control, you need to speak to your dialysis center to have your programme adjusted.

Thanks for responses. To answer a few questions. I am of moderate weight and in the morning i weigh in about 2 kg over my desired target. I don't seem to be holding any fluid and I use 3 yellow bags and 1 green bag at night. My BP is a tad on the high side but seeing my GP about this. Once again, thank you for the replies.

If your BP is high this usually indicates your still have a bit of fluid to come off.  Don't worry if lots of fluid is coming off - but do check everything with your neph.

If you are too dry this can cause high BP in some people.

Also if you are to dry you can cramp up.

I only put out between 400 & 550 UF.  Im not sure if that is good or bad? But i still urinate alot as well.

This sounds similar to my fiances start to dialysis. He was often over his goal weight, and we found out he was a high transporter. Holding the 2.5% overnight, he just seemed to be overloaded by the morning!
