Kidney End-of-Life Coalition Expands Online Resources for Dialysis Patients
12/29/2009

MIDLOTHIAN, Va.—The Kidney End-of-Life Coalition said Dec. 29 that it has updated its Patient and Family Education Web site to include a new section on “Choosing Not to Start and Choosing to Stop Dialysis.”

This section, which includes resources from the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada, is intended to assist dialysis patients and their families in making informed decisions about treatment options, including the option of no dialysis, according to the Coalition. The updated resources provide information on what patients can expect regarding symptoms and longevity, as well as information on conservative management.

The Patient and Family Education Web site also includes information on advance directives, end-of-life and palliative care and caregiver support services. In addition, the page contains personal end-of-life stories from the family’s perspective that were written and submitted by Kidney End-of-Life Coalition members.

During the advance care planning process, renal patients have a right to understand the progression of their illness, any anticipated outcomes and available treatment options, including the option of no dialysis, according to the Coalition. Many dialysis patients feel an enhanced sense of control over their future after talking with a family member or healthcare provider about their end-of-life wishes.

The resources provided under the “Choosing Not to Start and Choosing to Stop Dialysis” section are aimed at helping dialysis patients and their families discuss the most appropriate treatment option with their healthcare providers.
