Title: hernias on PD
Post by: Lillupie on December 26, 2009, 07:54:14 PM
hey guys,
I was wondering is there anyone here on PD? Those on PD, have you had any hernias? I am wondering if i miss an exchange, we know that we will absorb the fluid, but with more dextrose will that cause a hernia?

Don't know where you got the idea that dextrose causes hernias, but no. The extra weight could, if you are prone to hernias. You should look up what a hernia is, and it's causes. I don't see how dextrose absorption would play a role. I was on PD for 6 years and I never got a hernia, even though I lifted weights and did normal activities. Missed exchanges just caused more uremia not a hernia.

Yup, got me a hernia.  Didn't even know I had it until it burst and spilled all it's nasty stuff into my dialysate and gave me peritonitis.  Folks on PD are prone to hernias due to carrying extra fluid where none ain't usually carried.  okarol posted an article about hernias a few months back.
