Title: Favorite Christmas Song!!
Post by: jdwills83 on December 06, 2009, 11:33:15 AM
 :waving;   hello hello and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!  Its that time a year again and what always gets me in the holiday spirit is the music!!  So what is everyone's favorite song of the season?  I'll start first and.... I'll sing a little bit of it here!  :bandance;

WE NEED A LITTLE CHRISTMAS

Haul out the holly;
Put up the tree before my spirit falls again.
Fill up the stocking,
I may be rushing things, but deck the halls again now.
For we need a little Christmas
Right this very minute,
Candles in the window,
Carols at the spinet.
Yes, we need a little Christmas
Right this very minute.

It's the most wonderful time of the year

"It's the most wonderful time of the year.
With the kids jingle belling,
and everyone telling you,
"Be of good cheer,"
It's the most wonderful time of the year.

There'll be parties for hosting,
marshmallows for toasting and
caroling out in the snow.
there'll be scary ghost stories and
tales of the glories of Christmases
long, long ago."

It's the most wonderful time of the year.
There'll be much mistletoeing
and hearts will be glowing,
when loved ones are near.
It's the most wonderful time of the year.

Oops, didn't know I had to sing.  I usually get paid extra for that.

Funny:  I'm not really a Christian (some would say agnostic but I'd firmly disagree with that) but I seem to get the Jesus thing at this time of year.  Please don't try to explain it... just an observation.

O Come All Ye Faithful
Joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem.
Come and behold Him,
Born the King of Angels;
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

O Sing, choirs of angels,
Sing in exultation,
Sing all that hear in heaven God's holy word.
Give to our Father glory in the Highest;
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

All Hail! Lord, we greet Thee,
Born this happy morning,
O Jesus! for evermore be Thy name adored.
Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing;
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Saviour is born
Christ, the Saviour is born

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth "

This is def my favourite - and we always sing a bit of Samoan as well at school...

O Holy Night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining.
Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, the night when Christ was born;
O night, O Holy Night , O night divine!
O night, O Holy Night , O night divine!

Ifo atu ia, fa'alogo i angelu
Le Po Paia, le fanau ai Iesu
Le Po, Paia le Po le Po Paia

Mom always played Snoopy's Christmas. That's where snoopy is fighting the Red Baron and gets forced down behind enemy lines on Christmas. Mom always played it loud to 'wake us up' although we always were awake and waiting to be let downstairs.

This is kind of hard but very nice.  There are so many favorites.  Mine tend  more toward the classics with Bach, Handel, Pacbel but I remember my mom always sang "I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause" to my Dad.  Not always good, but always fun and sometimes funny.

I love to hear Jingle Bell Rock. When my brother was little hewould stand on the back of the sofa and we would point flashlights at him while he sang it... like he was on stage .. so cute.

Great thread!!!  I love love love Christmas music.  Its hard to pick just one favorite...but I decided on:

Oh Come Oh Come Emmanuel (lyrics condensed to my favorite verses)

O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Wisdom from on high,
Who orderest all things mightily;
To us the path of knowledge show,
And teach us in her ways to go.

O come, Desire of nations, bind
In one the hearts of all mankind;
Bid Thou our sad divisions cease,
And be Thyself our King of Peace.

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas (preferably sung by Ella Fitzgerald)

It somehow captures everything I hope the holidays will be year after year - light, social, bubbly, uncomplicated, with family and friends all resolving to move past their problems and make the best of it.  :christmastree;

There was another  thread called "what did you want to be when you grew up" and I was afraid to answer cause I'm pretty weird usually but you opened the door.  I wanted to grow up to be Ella Fitzgerald... funny.
I skiiny white boy not even start in music at the point.  That that's what "who" I wanted to be.  My dumb little brother wanted to be a race car so mine wasn't really all that weird.

:rofl;

:2thumbsup; Sounds perfectly normal to me, Dan. Who wouldn't want to be Ella Fitzgerald? There is just no arguing with that voice.

Uh, but a race car? Maybe my husband, the automotive engineer, could explain that one.

:secret; I am reasonably certain that there was a period of time when I wanted to be Han Solo.

Hello, Hello and Merry Christmas.  I have to go along with Hanify, my very
favorite is O Holy Night, but I do like Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.
I also like  Joy To The World

Joy to the World
Joy to the world! the Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
and heaven and nature sing,
and heaven and nature sing,
and heaven, and heaven and nature sing.

Joy to the earth! the Savior reigns;
Let men their songs employ;
while fields and floods,
rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessing flow
far as the curse is found,
far as the curse is found,
far as, far as the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace,
and makes the nations prove
the glories of His righteousness,
and wonders of His love,
and wonders of His love,
and wonders, wonders of His love.

Another one of my favorites, and my favorites when I was 6 years old  :

Chipmunk Christmas Song

Christmas, Christmas time is near
Time for toys and time for cheer
We've been good, but we can't last
Hurry Christmas, hurry fast

Want a plane that loops the loop
Me, I want a hula hoop
We can hardly stand the wait
Please Christmas, don't be late.

Want a plane that loops the loop
I still want a hula hoop
We can hardly stand the wait
Please Christmas, don't be late.

We can hardly stand the wait
Please Christmas, don't be late.

Little Donkey ... a) it reminds me of being in the nativity plays (I always played a shepherd whilst wearing a tea-towel on my head) at primary school, and b) I think I always felt a tad sorry for the donkey.

"Little donkey, little donkey on the dusty road
Got to keep on plodding onwards with your precious load
Been a long time, little donkey, through the winters night
Dont give up now, little donkey,
Bethlehems in sight

Ring out those bells tonight
Bethlehem, Bethlehem
Follow that star tonight
Bethlehem, Bethlehem

Little donkey, little donkey, had a heavy day
Little donkey, carry Mary safely on her way
Little donkey, little donkey, journey's end is near
There are wiseman waiting for a sign to bring them here

Do not falter little donkey, there's a star ahead
It will guide you, little donkey, to a cattle shed

Ring out those bells tonight
Bethlehem, Bethlehem
Follow that star tonight
Bethlehem, Bethlehem

Little donkey, little donkey, had a heavy day
Little donkey, carry Mary, safely on her way
Little donkey, carry Mary, safely on her way"

Oh, and Jona Lewie, Stop the Cavalry (even though it doesn't really have that much to do with Christmas!)

My mom's fav was "Silver Bells", so that always chokes me up.  She also played an Elvis holiday collection over and over and over. . .okay, not so choked up on that, but when I hear one, I always laugh.

My personal fav - "You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch."  It's not Xmas until I hear that on TV!

You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch.
You really are a heel.
You're as cuddly as a cactus,
You're as charming as an eel.
Mr. Grinch.

You're a bad banana
With a greasy black peel.

You're a monster, Mr. Grinch.
Your heart's an empty hole.
Your brain is full of spiders,
You've got garlic in your soul.
Mr. Grinch.

I wouldn't touch you, with a
thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole.

Oh Dear... I'm being greedy....I have several that I like for different reasons...

This one's about the poor boys (that's all most of them were) who were fighting at Christmas during WW1... Very poignant...

Christmas 1915.

1915 on Christmas Day
On the western front the guns all died away
And laying in the mud on bags of sand
We heard a German sing from no man's land
He had tenor voice so pure and true
The words were strange but every note we knew
Soaring ore the the living dead and dammed
The German sang of peace from no man's land

They left their trenches and we left ours
Beneath tin hats the smiles bloomed like wild flowers
With photos cigarettes and pots of wine
We built a soldier's truce on the front line
Their singer was a lad of 21
We begged another song before the dawn
And sitting in the mud and blood and feed
He sang again the song all longed to hear

Silent night, no cannons roar
A king is born of peace for evermore
All's calm, all's bright
All brothers hand in hand
In 19 and 15 in no man's land

And in the morning all the guns boomed in the rain
And we killed them and they killed us again
At night they charged we fought them hand to hand
And i killed the boy that sang in no man's land

Silent night, no cannons roar
A king is born of peace for evermore
All's calm, all's bright
All brothers hand in hand
And that young soldier sings
And the song of peace still rings
Though the captains and all the kings
Built no man's land

Sleep in heavenly peace

Then there's Fairytale of New York... Showing that some people's lives are in such turmoil, Christmas is just an added burden...Bit of poetic licence taken with the lyrics, I think... If I'm right, the NYPD don't have a choir..

Fairytale of New York...

It was Christmas Eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me: won't see another one
And then they sang a song
The rare old mountain dew
I turned my face away and dreamed about you
Got on a lucky one
Came in eighteen to one
I´ve got a feeling
This year´s for me and you
So happy christmas
I love you baby
I can see a better time
Where all our dreams come true.

They got cars big as bars
They got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
It´s no place for the old
When you first took my hand on a cold christmas eve
You promised me broadway was waiting for me
You were handsome you were pretty
Queen of new york city when the band finished playing they yelled out for more
Sinatra was swinging all the drunks they were singing
We kissed on a corner
Then danced through the night.

And the boys from the NYPD choir were singing Galway Bay
And the bells were ringing out for christmas day.

You´re a bum you´re a punk
You´re an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
You scumbag you maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy christmas your arse I pray god it´s our last.

And the boys of the NYPD choir's still singing Galway Bay
And the bells were ringing out
For christmas day.

I could have been someone
Well so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
Can´t make it out alone
I´ve built my dreams around you

And the boys of the NYPD choir's still singing Galway Bay
And the bells are ringing out
For christmas day.

Then there's Santa Clause is coming to Town.... I liked the idea of Santa checking his list... Always knew I'd be on the 'Nice List'... Such an angel, I am!...

"Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town"

You better watch out
You better not cry
You better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town

He's making a list,
Checking it twice;
Gonna find out who's naughty or nice.
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town

He sees you when you're sleeping
He knows when you're awake
He knows if you've been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake

With little tin horns and little toy drums
Rooty toot toots and rummy tum tums
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town

He sees you when you're sleeping
He knows when you're awake
He knows if you've been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake
Goodness sake

You better watch out
You better not cry
You better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming
Santa Claus is coming
Santa Claus is coming to town

(Coming to town)
Santa's a busy man he has no time to play
He's got millions of stockings to fill on Christmas day
(Santa Claus is coming to town)
(Coming to town)
(Santa Claus is coming to town)
(Coming to town)

And then there's my Christmas party piece... I'm always being asked to sing this at this time of the year...

Oh Holy Night...

O night divine, the night when Christ was born;
O night, O Holy Night , O night divine!
O night, O Holy Night , O night divine!

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
O'er the world a star is sweetly gleaming,
Now come the wisemen from out of the Orient land.
The King of kings lay thus lowly manger;
In all our trials born to be our friends.
He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger,
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!

Truly He taught us to love one another,
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother.
And in his name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
With all our hearts we praise His holy name.
Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we,
His power and glory ever more proclaim!
His power and glory ever more proclaim!

Oh boy... How greedy can you get... I love this thread... Making me feel Christmassy!....

Darth....

of the more traditionall carols i think "silver bells" is my favorite. but then as most of you are aware i'm just a bit weird, so how about this one.....

Percy, The Puny Poinsettia

Percy the puny poinsettia
is hanging his bloom in dismay
If they had just kept him wetta
he’d be a houseplant today
Folks liked the other plants betta
now he’s alone on the shelf
Even a plant with no uncle or aunt
shouldn’t spend Christmas Day by himself

Holiday shoppers would stop by the counter
and pick up a plant to take home
Until one by one all his friends were adopted
and Percy was left all alone

Percy the puny poinsettia
is hanging his bloom in dismay
If they had just kept him wetta
he’d be a houseplant today
Folks liked the other plants betta
now he’s alone on the shelf
Even a plant with no uncle or aunt
shouldn’t spend Christmas Day by himself

Then into the store on the night before Christmas
came a poor little girl who was cryin’
But when she saw Percy her eyes opened wide
and she said “Can I please make him mine?”

Now Percy the puny poinsettia
is standing beside Mr. Tree
His leaves have never been redda,
he’s as proud as a flower can be

Somebody made him feel betta,
rescued him off of the shelf
Even a plant with no uncle or aunt
shouldn’t spend Christmas Day by himself

and then there's this one.................The Twelve Days After Christmas

The first day after Christmas, my true love and I had a fight
And so I chopped down that old pear tree
And burnt it, just for spite
Then I took a cartridge
and shot that blasted partridge
My true love, my true love, my true love gave to me.

The second day after Christmas, I pulled on the old rubber gloves
And very gently wrung the necks
Of both those turtle doves.

Then I took a cartridge
and shot that blasted partridge
My true love, my true love, my true love gave to me.

The third day after Christmas, my mother came down with the croup
So I had to use those three French hens
To make her chicken soup.

Then I took a cartridge
and shot that blasted partridge
My true love, my true love, my true love gave to me.

The four calling birds were a big mistake
For their language was obscene
The five golden rings were completely fake
And they turned my fingers putrid green.

Then I took a cartridge
and shot that blasted partridge
My true love, my true love, my true love gave to me.

The sixth day after Christmas, the six laying geese wouldn't lay
So I sent the whole darn gaggle to
The local A.S.P.C.A.

Then I took a cartridge
and shot that blasted partridge
My true love, my true love, my true love gave to me.

The seventh day after Christmas, Oh what a mess I had found
It seems the seven swans-a-swimming could'nt and they all had drowned

Then I took a cartridge
and shot that blasted partridge
My true love, my true love, my true love gave to me.

The eighth day after Christmas, before they could even suspect
I bundled up the
Twelve drummers drumming
Eleven pipers piping
Ten lords-a-leaping
Nine ladies dancing
Eight maids-a-milking
(well, actually I kept *one* of the ladies)
And sent them back collect

Then I took a cartridge
and shot that blasted partridge
My true love, my true love, my true love gave to me.

I wrote my true love
"We are through, love!"
And I said in so many words
"Furthermore your Christmas gifts were for the friggin Birds

Four calling birds, Three french hens, Two turtle doves And a partridge in a pear tree!"

And with my final cartridge
and shot that blasted partridge ( I'm sure it's dead by now.)
My true love, my true love, my true love gave to me.

I love Percy the Puny Poinsettia!!!  :rofl;  :rofl;

One of my mom's favorite's was "Grandma got run over by a Reindeer".  I just wasn't Christmas until we heard it.  One year my daughter and I got her a reindeer on a rocking chair that played it when you rocked it.  Hilarious!
