Title: A Ghost Story
Post by: livecam on October 27, 2006, 06:09:24 PM
Uncle Matty had a fierce temper.  There are stories upon stories about people who made Uncle Matty mad for one reason or another and experienced his wrath.  Underneath that sometimes hot tempered exterior was a gem of a man.  He was someone who had time for everyone and always had great stories from the old days when our business was young.  If a guy was in bad shape financially, more than once Uncle Matty took care of the guy and asked nothing in return.  Matt was a pioneer, one of the oldest and most experienced men in the video business.  He shaded some of the biggest shows around from the late 40's through the early 50's.  He made the Ed Sullivan Show, Playhouse 90, the Jackie Gleason Show, and others  look great.  Later he moved to Calfornia and spent over 40 years with us at our workplace in the Los Angeles area.  He was the master of master control, the best at what he did.

Now Uncle Matty occupied a special place called video control.  It was his realm and his alone on the evening shift for all of those 40 plus years.  He worked with us through his mid 70's until suddenly he began to have pain in his back and decided to take some time off.  It was cancer and although he fought it hard to the end the disease finally killed him.  The place hasn't been the same without him.

Early one morning recently around 4:30AM, people were busy with their morning routines getting ready for the Morning News which starts at 5.  One of the guys walked into the video control area and couldn't believe what he saw.  There was Matt, sitting in his chair in front of the camera controls.  He didn't see what Matt was doing and didn't stick around very long.  He got out of that room fast. Nobody else saw Matt and it hasn't happened again.  Is Matt haunting the place?  I don't think so.  I think he was just paying a visit to a place he loved and doing it during quiet hours so as not to offend anyone.  Did this really happen?  Who is to say.

Is this a "true" story?

Makes you wonder, doesn't it?  There are just so many things that defy any rational explanation.

The summer I was 13, I started working for a family that owned a gift shop in our little resort town.  I baby sat for the kids for a while, and then started waiting on customers in the store.  The summer before, one of the owner, Donna's, closest friends, Donald, had died in a horrible motorcycle accident.  Before he died, he had promised her that he would get in touch with her if he died first.

I was working when she came into the shop with the kids and the new babysitter in tow one afternoon.  The little babysitter was completely freaked out.  They had driven past the cemetery where Donald was buried on the way into town.  Just as they passed the cemetery, the power locks on the van began to click up and down rapidly.  The babysitter had even tried to hold down the lock and couldn't make them stop.  They only stopped when Donna said, "Stop it Donald; you're scaring the kids."

I admit I was pretty skeptical - I figured it was a short in the power locks.  But a few days later, I saw something that made me not so sure about a scientific explanation.  Donna was waiting on a customer.  At the time, the store sold cowboy boots, so the storage room was packed floor to ceiling with big boot boxes.  You had to use a tall ladder if you wanted to get to the ones on the top, and the stacks were so heavy that when someone pulled something out of the middle, everything was in danger of crashing down.  (Organization was never Donna's strong point.)  The ladder was old and rather rickety, and the floor was a solid slab of cement.  I walked into the back room just as Donna, perched too high on the ladder, yanked loose a box from the stack, and the force sent the entire stack of boxes and the ladder into a tilt.  I started to run towards her.  She was clearly past the point of no return for regaining her balance and I was sure she was about to kill herself on the cement floor.  Before I got to her, she yelled, "Donald, help!"

And the ladder, Donna, and entire stack of boxes righted themselves.

Your hair really does stand straight up on the back of your neck, you know.

Yep, that hair on the back of your neck will stand up.
     My housekeeper claims in our old house in San Bernardino, she had an experience.  Seems she was alone in the house, bent over the bathtub cleaning the tub with cleanser, when someone walked by and patted her on the butt.  She thought my hubby had come home and walked through the bathroom.  She walked out of the bathroom and no one was in the house.
     In the same house I had a pot land halfway across the kitchen and spin on the floor.  There was no way it would have landed where it landed in our kitchen without physical help.
    Anyway we called our ghost Twinkie (after the comment in Ghostbusters) and it never did anything malicious, just moved things around, liked to take the car keys and put them in different places.  I frequently asked it to return things and usually found them in odd places. The house had been built in the late 1800s so I am sure there were residual memories there.

I remember one of the scariest things that has happend to me was one night i was cleaning my kitchen, had the music going and feeling good and i heard something fall, but the funny thing is i heard it right in between the songs,  it scared me a little but then i didnt think nothing of it UNTIL i realized what had fell,  when i was done with the kitchen i went to the living room to check it out and on the floor (that i had vacuumed earlier) was the movie the EXORCIST...  This is back when we had VHS, all stacked nice and neat and we had hundreds of them, now out of all those damn tapes WHY THIS ONE??  Scared me so bad i ran to the room (YES, I RAN)  and locked myself in there until my hubby came home, even then, i didnt want to open the bedroom door for him cuz i thought he was someone else portraying himself as my hubby.    :popcorn;
