Title: Nephrectomy booked for the 12Jan
Post by: Des on November 24, 2009, 06:13:11 AM
Hi,

My left kidney will be removed the 12 Jan in the Donald Gordon Hospital, Johannesburg.(you will find them on the net) I will be in hospital for about a week and "D" will then kick in.

I will have to redo my transplant workup tests 2 weeks after this op. and only then can we apply to government to have authorization for a non-relative transplant My donor will have the rest of her tests done during the same period. This authorization can take anything from 6 weeks to 3 months...

I am so scared....

Please keep me in your prayers.

Des...I can sure understand being scared but what a great step on the road to transplant!  I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.  It's so wonderful you have a donor and bless her for being willing!

Of course I will keep you in my prayers.  Do we have a way of knowing how you are doing while you are in the hospital?  I don't want to worry for a whole week.

Des,

 :grouphug; :grouphug;

I really understand being scared. I don't like surgery and I have been through so many. But this will be a good positive step in your whole treatment plan.

And when that old kidney comes out, you'll have a nice cozy place ready for your new one!

So, think about those lovely days to come, dear, and feel the hugs surrounding you from all of us who care about you.

I would be scared, too, Des. I will be thinking of you all throughout, and wishing you the best of luck.

You can do this. You are moving forward and reclaiming your life.

Take care. (flowers, balloons, hugs)

How long were you in theatre and how long in hospital? Did you have a catheter in your bladder? Did you have a drain in your wound? How big was the wound? Where was the wound? How soon after could you walk? How soon were you allowed back at work and driving?   Sorry, but these questions are just the beginning! hehehehe

Thankyou all so much for all your prayers and well wishes. I really appreciate it.
I am not so scared for the operation I think I am just scared about he whole "lifechanging" thing.

Ylguy, I haven't got a "plan" yet on how to contact IHD while I am in hospital. I will get someone to post either here or on FB for me. I will let you know.

Thanks again.

Des

Best of luck , im sure it will go well for you.

You had some questions this may help!!!

I had both out at the same time on the 2nd October. 3 Hours in theatre. 2 drains, removed after 2 days, catheter removed after 2 days. I left hospital after 7 days, Walking (badly) after 5 days. I was driving after 4 weeks. Back at work after 5 weeks, 3 days a week to fit in with dialysis. Walking normally after 14 days. 43 clips removed after 10 days.
The Scar is 24" long and from one side to the other and 1 inch above my bellybutton. But i had BOTH removed and they were massive kidneys to remove so not normal size scar.

Good luck.

compared to what they told me it was a walk in the park, they said 21 days in hospital (21 days with no sleep then, snorers!) and 8 weeks at home in bed and no driving or work for 3 months. No chance!!! got to earn a living!!

Its not even that i was fit before the op, i wasnt i was really quite ill so im no superhero.
