Title: Why does my BP decide to play hide and seek while it is at dialysis?
Post by: kitkatz on November 17, 2009, 08:33:26 PM
I am getting a little worried because my BP has decided to drop 2 to 4 hours into treatment, then stays down. However I am not feeling like it has dropped. I feel perfectly normal and can carry on a conversation with the techs.  If the doc sees it has dropped he stops all fluid taking, then I come off of dialysis heavy with fluid and will be overloaded. I make the techs push the weight issues, otherwise I would leave fluid laden every time and get really sick. Any ideas what is going on? I am watching the fluid intake. I have been at this eleven years already.

The way our Nurse explained it to us was that when the BP drops it is an indication that the excess fluid in the blood has been removed, but the fluid in the cells has not moved over to the bloodstream yet. For Sharon the BP drops about half way through a run, then slowly climbs back up to normal. Sounds like your cells are not getting the signal for some reason......

Hi Kitkatz (just popped in to say hello!)

Low Bp half way into dialysis. Snap about 6 years ago.

Does the machine you are on have a profile setting? If so the machine can be set to take more fluid off at the start of dialysis. Which gives your body a better chance to recover over the next couple of hours. plus your Bp. I am on profile 2 which is. Say i am 2 up without being profiled the machince would remove 0.5 an hour but for me i take off 1.5 in the first two hours and only 0.5 in the last two hours. Which works for me. Bp been fine.

Yours always

Kevno (still hiding from those big sticks!)

I would ask to run on a crit line for 3 or 4 runs.  See just how the fluid is coming off.

Can you get them to just pause the UF, not stop it completely?  I used to do the same thing on my NxStage, but I didn't have to ask permission to adjust my UF rate.  In-center, they tended to just give me a little saline without stopping the UF.  It didn't work as well as what I did at home, but better to only leave a little up from dry weight that a lot.
