American Kidney Fund’s First National Gala, The Hope Affair, Raises Over $600,000
The kidney care community turned out in force on the evening of Oct. 6 for the American Kidney Fund’s national gala, The Hope Affair. The sold-out, first-time event raised over $600,000 for American Kidney Fund programs and services in support of those with and at risk for kidney disease.
Washington, DC October 13, 2009 — The kidney care community turned out in force on the evening of Oct. 6 for the American Kidney Fund’s national gala, The Hope Affair. The sold-out, first-time event raised over $600,000 for American Kidney Fund programs and services in support of those with and at risk for kidney disease.
“It has been an honor to serve as Event Chair for such an important cause,” said Kent J. Thiry, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of DaVita. “Charity events like The Hope Affair are an important way to increase public awareness of the impact of kidney disease on millions of Americans across our nation.”
“We are grateful to all of the individuals and corporations who showed such outstanding support for The Hope Affair,” said LaVarne A. Burton, President and CEO of the American Kidney Fund. “Your generosity will help us to carry out our mission of direct, treatment-related financial assistance to patients in need; health education; and prevention outreach.”
The American Kidney Fund provides charitable assistance to 1 out of every 5 dialysis patients in the United States, helping them to maintain their health insurance coverage and to pay other treatment-related expenses that insurance does not cover. The American Kidney Fund provides kidney health education services and free screenings to people at risk for kidney disease, and advocates for equitable access and quality health care for kidney patients.
More than 350 guests attended The Hope Affair, held at the Newseum and emceed by Wolf Blitzer, anchor of CNN’s The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer. Four key Congressional lawmakers were honored for supporting the interests of kidney patients:
