Are there any other science fiction fans out there besides little old me? I have a few sites to share if anyone is interested.
I like:
on TV:
Babylon5
Star Trek (old new, whatever, I like it all.)
Land of the Lost
Buck Rogers in the 24 th Century
Duck Dodgers (with Daffy Duck)
Star Wars
Battlestar Galactica ( old and new series)
Books:
Mercedes Lackey
Anne McCaffrey
Terry Goodkind
Star Trek books (got to be so many coming out I cannot keep up with them)
Star Wars
Piers Anthony
Isaac Asimov
The early Dune series
I like books where the adventure is taking place in the spaceship.
Movies:
Independence Day (My favorite movie I think)
Armageddon
Harry Potter
Star Trek (My favorite one is the whales one)
So join me, won't you... on the search for intelligent life forms out there, new civilization, and we will boldly go...
-
What about Lost in Space?
-
Does X-men count as Sci-fi?
I'm a comic and a movie fan of X-men and most of the new comic movies.
-
I would think X-Men count as sci fi.
-
Yup - Anne McCaffrey rules!
I want a fire lizard!
If you like Harry Potter, you have to try Harry Dresden. Jim Butcher's Dresden Files books are truly amazing. I took his latest to my last iron transfusion. Is it rude to laugh out loud to yourself in a room full of sick people? (I hope not - I couldn't stop cracking up.)
-
Eragon and the next book were good. I loved in the book whenever he needed to move the story along, or get the hero into the bad guys hands, he ended up knocked out by something.
-
I've only read the first Eragon one, but I liked it. Must be nice to have your own family publishing company to get your stuff published nationally while you are still a teenager! (I admit it; I'm jealous!)
-

Big X-men fan myself. Have the movies and video games for the PS2.
I really liked "Land of the Lost" also kitkatz.
Im drawing a blank right now. Can't think of anything else. Too hungry.
I'll try to think of something else later.
-
All of the shows named so far are good. I'm not a real big fan of the new Battlestar Gallactica though, they changed too much for my tastes from the original show. I think it could have been a show of it's own with a different title. I have a couple of British sci-fi shows that I like. Dr. Who (both the older ones and the new series now in season 2), and Red Dwarf. You can see Dr. Who (Doctor Who if you search it) on sci-fi for the second season of the new series and BBC America for the first season of the new series. You can find Red Dwarf on BBC America. You can also buy both Dr. Who and Red Dwarf on DVD.
-
i like pretty much everything already mentioned plus Stargate (both of the TV series and movie) :clap; how'bout my favorite martian? can that be construed as sci-fi?
later.
Rolando
-

Why not? Loved it when I was just a tot!
-
I am a big fan of Octavia Butler's books. I've read all of them. Also love Margaret Atwood's sci fi books. So Kit Kat, you are not alone....
-
Count me as another card carrying nerd :)
Land of the Lost.. now THAt takes me back to the 70's.... I remember thinking those Sleestaks were scary as a kid... and I thought they coloured crystal things they used in those pylons to control the weather and stuff were neat.
I enjoy old and new BSG.. I think the new one has gone in a great direction and I am enjoying it despite how far behind we are down here...
I have just seen a few episodes of Heroes (cough cough) and love it. Think it will be great though the first ep is officially starting here next week.
Red Dwarf is classically funny show with a SF twist.. very clever specially in seasons 1-5 or so. It got a bit tired after that IMHO.
I also enjoy reading George R. R. Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice series... just fantastic work.. pity it takes him so darn long to write each book! :)
other great shows: Babylon 5, Blake's 7, Space: 1999, the various Treks, Quantum Leap and so on....
-
I just finished a book (back before some recent eye trouble that has limited my on-line time lately) I think you'll like if you like science fiction that hangs together knowing what we know about physics - Sun of Suns (Virga, Book 1) (Hardcover) by Karl Schroeder . It is the First book of a promised trilogy and I am looking forward to the next installment. It is hard for me to refrain from saying anything but reading it without really knowing anything about it was a great pleasure so I will reserve the choice to know more to you I am sure Amazon can provide details but let me just say that their space travel is in wooden ships and it seems perfectly plausible.
Maybe a IHD Sci-Fi book club is in order. I don't know anyone else who's read Sun of suns. I gave my copy to a buddy and I'm still waiting for him to start it. I'm aching to talk about it.

Hey Bill and others,
I listen to a couple of podcasts in this arena while I'm on the machine that help pass the time, and if you are having some issues with reading it might be something cool to do if you have a MP3 player handy.
I listen to the Slice of Sci-Fi podcast, The Babylon Podcast and the Treks in SCI-FI podcast (amongst others). They are all good shows. I also enjoy the ExtraLife and GeeksOn podcasts, but they are not really about Sci-Fi.
I find those things really help pass the time during dialysis AND I can keep up to date with what's going on!
-
What is the Babylon Podcast about? And where can you download these podcasts? I am new to MP3 players, really new, since I do not have one yet. LOL
-
I am having a Babylon 5 DVD weekend. I don;t know why but it make me feel better.
-
Anyone watched Farscape?
To far behind on BSG to catch up since cable moved Sci Fi to digital and then waited to get digital cable. Heck I missed Stargate coming to a close, uggh
-
Stargate I is now out in full DVD set for 249.00 at Costco. I want it!
-
:santahat; :christmastree; :rudolph;
Guess I will have to watch reruns that are usually out of sequence on tv. Or if they sold it indivdually, then I can collect it.
-
KitKatz, I loved that Star Treck about the whales too.
Here are two old, but very good Sci Fi movies:
Forbidden Planet (A real classic)
Robinson Caruso on Mars
(If you haven't seen this your missing a really good flick in spite of the sort of silly title. Great feel good ending too)
For all you animal lovers there's an adorable little monkey named Mona in this one.

If one was to gather up everything I have done in my life and then calculate percentage of time spent on each activity, I think that time spent watching Star Trek would win hands down... going to school/studying? Nope, Star Trek wins... socializing with friends or family either living out here or living in the computer? No again, Star Trek still wins! And, I have loved and am still enjoying every minute of it. The original is on every morning for the hour before we have to leave for dialysis.
Kitkatz, did you make it to the Star Trek Experience while in Las Vegas?
Movies:
Star Trek 4 - The Journey Home (the whales one)
Star Trek 8 - First Contact (I loved Zephram Cochran as an accidental hero, and the actual first contact)
Star Trek 9 - Insurrection (slipped by practically unnoticed)
(I have also been appalled at some of the absolute garbage dumped on us in the form of Star Trek movies. The writers have committed treason against the name Star Trek and all of us Trekkers out here)
Due out on Christmas Day 2008 - Star Trek 11 - Star Trek (Kirk and Spock pre Star Trek with other actors playing them)
Another movie (non Star Trek, but noteworthy)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
(an all time favorite, we are not alone!)
-
I love all the Star Treks. I watch the old Capt Kirk ones during my early morning dialysis sessions. Even as a kid, I liked to read scifi. My two favorite authors are Andre Norton and Madeleine LeEngle.
-
i'm in the process of reading some of mercedes lackey's stuff and watching all of dr. who on dvd.
-
I love Mercedes lackey. Read her Fairy Godmother book.

Was there a Star Trek 10? or was Star Trek 11 a typo? Hate to have missed one.

Yes, Nemesis. Not one of my favorites.
-
Ohhh, that one. I never saw the whole thing, but the parts I did watch on tv did not make me want to pay attention to it.. If it is on again on tv, I'll try to watch it again, but not going to make an effort to rent it.
-
I not only like science fiction, but I also enjoy horror movies and scary TV shows . Everything from Boris Karloff Frankenstein to Outer Limits to Twilight Zone to anything Alfred Hitchcock ever did. The only thing I don't like are horror movies with scenes of gross mutilations and murders, like Freddy Kruger and the like. I have a weak stomach, which is the reason I hate dialysis.
-
With Sylar playing Spock it should be interesting hehehe
hey kitkatz so sorry I missed this.. did you find the babylon 5 podcast??
It's at http://www.babylonpodcast.com
They have interviews with the actors, producters, staffers, Geeking on the shows etc. A really great listen. I love it. There's been a lot recently with the release of "The Lost Tales" :)
good stuff :)

I'm with you Jannie! The grossness is not horror. Is a cheap substitute for the talented storytelling and mastery of suspense that is so critical to quality horror.

I'll second that - slasher flicks don't do anything for me. I can tolerate the gore better in something like "Saving Private Ryan", where they are showing something that is close to reality, but the blood and guts as entertainment just makes me queasy.
Just because they can show the blood spurting all over doesn't mean they should. "Jaws" is still creepy and scary, and the was hardly a bloody scene in the whole thing. That's the kind of scary movie I prefer - where it's left up to your imagination.
-
I gotta agree there, the scariest movies are those that don't actually show the violence/gore, it's all implied! That, and I do like the OLD movies better, they seem to be better than a lot of the current movies.
-
So I guess you guys aren't "Saw" fans, huh? :lol;
-
I watch all of my movies and DVD's of television shows at Dialysis and I now rate the quality or each production as to whether or not it takes me completely our of myself and allows me to forget I'm at Dialysis.
"Battlestar Galactica" is one of those shows that completely overtakes my imagination. The new version takes the original elements of Glen A. Larson's first creation and twists them into a mosaic of powerful, compelling television. I believe if you rent "Battlestar Galactica: The Miniseries" which basically takes place 40 years after the original show, you'll be hooked. Great performances, fantastic writing and solid special effects add up to a fantastic piece of entertainment.
I am also a die hard "Star Trek" fan but if I were to choose one show, it would be "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." Much like "Battlestar Galactica" this show is darker and deals with a myriad of themes and plays like one long morality play.
I'm re-watching all the Star Trek movies and the Bonus Disc's at Dialysis right now. Star Trek II - Star Trek IV are my favorites. It is it's own little trilogy within all 6 films. I remember reading where they were considering using the Star Trek novel "Probe" as the basis for Star Trek V. Really a great book, a direct sequel to Star Trek IV, but unfortunately Shatner's ego required he write and direct Star Trek V. I took some college friends to the theater and you know that early scene where Spock uses his gravity boots to dive down El Capitan to save Kirk? When the audience burst out laughing I knew the film was doomed.
Here's hoping J.J. Abrams knows what he's doing with recasting all the original roles with younger actors. One thing we've learned about Star Trek movies over the years though: Star Trek can turn ugly when it's slapped together with a limited budget. I've heard Paramount wants this new Star Trek film to be epic. It's about time Paramount paid some respect to their biggest tentpole franchise.
And yes, mock me if you must, but I've been to a Star Trek convention. I didn't dress up, but it was a pretty exciting day.
Ah...the perils of youth.

I am naughty and download new "Heroes" (we are a couple weeks behind on TV here) and watch at Dialysis along with Californication(I have to be careful watching THAT around some of the older patients!!! Don't want to be responsible for a heart attack or something :) ), Family Guy, Chuck etc... if a show is good and it helps me not notice 45 or so minutes of dialysis then it rates for me. I am also going through Season 3 of new BSG - not yet on the horizion to screen down here - and it is amazing stuff. Really keeps me hooked.
Another show I recommend - Charlie Jade - a Canadian/South Africian production only lasted one season but a blow your mind kind of show....

So, when you d/l them, are you on the same episode as us? Just wondering, b/c I *love* Heroes, and it would be nice to talk about it, but don't wanna ruin it for ya if your not on the same episode as I am!! :)
-
Well i've just d/l ep 5 season 2.. the one that aired on Monday in the US :) (thank you naughty internet pirates!) but I am holding off (difficult I love this show!) watching till dialysis... at least there I can give it my full attention and alas don't have to be somewhere else.... :)
The last ep I watched was "The Kindness of Strangers" where .... oh no I better not say :)
-
Don't talk about Monday's episode yet, I haven't watched it yet. I have it on the DVR since I have classes at night on Monday and the last couple days have been something, so hopefully I can watch it Thursday compared to watching it on my PC.
-
I became a big fan of Heroes this season. It would be nice to have that regeneration ability that girl has on the show... no more kidney problems!

I need some HELP!!
Not sure if I am all caught up on Heroes via nbc.com. Last episode they have on their site is when Hiro takes his dad back in time and finds out who killed his father, Noah is shot and wakes up from the dead in some bed. So what happened on Monday nights episode on 11/26, or am I still missing an episode or two that's not on the nbc site yet? :thx;
-
Chris! don't say :)
That ep you describe is last week's one.. you're not missing anything except the most current episode - aired on 26th November....
That's Season 2, Episode 10... only 1 more to go :( darn you writers strike!
I will watch this episode tomorrow at dialysis :)
-
Farscape- My daughter brought me the set to watch.
