I am trying to build my husband up because he has lost so much weight in the last 3 months after having a very bad bout of peritonitis. He had to have his tube out and go on to Hemo. Hopefully his tube will be fitted back in at the end of the month. The last two weeks he has been feeling so much better and consequently his appitite has returned.When he was on PD his dry weight was 76kilo on Hemo for what ever reason, no it was because he had lost a lot of weight they put him down to 71kilo. He went for his Hemo this morning and his weight had gone up by 1 kilo he explained to the nurse it was because he had eaten so much better over the weekend, so what did she do.TAKE A LOT MORE FLUID OFF how can they tell what is fluid and what is body weight. He has not got any adema. At this rate he will stay skinny.I find it so frustrating. What are they supposed to do "Listen to the patient" :Kit n Stik;

Hiya , hmm i too am trying to get to grips with this! It seems our machines do it all for us , they work out how much fluid to take off and what our target dry weight is ! There is a thing called the BVM on our machines and on Saturday my BVM was 89, so the nurse said my weight that day when i had finished was my ' perfect weight "!! Also if your machine is set to say pull off 1500 and you dont have 1500 in excess fluid on you, it wont pull it off , it will say its not there. So i guess your hubby still has more fluid on him than you thought ! By the way odema isnt always visible , alot of fluid can be held in the tissues. When i did the change from PD to Hemo i was terribly overloaded and most of it was in the trunk of my body (no visible signs) round my lungs and heart and also hidden away in my tissues.

make sure you tell the nurse/tech how much to take off. insist on it. they may argue at first but they will do it. i always have the machine turned toward me after they complete set up so i can check to make sure it's set up correctly and monitor it during the session. i track my incoming and outgoing weight. that way i know exactly how much i've gained. based on how i've been eating and how my shoes fit, i usually know the difference between fluid and weight gain. no one, working kidneys or not always weighs the same. dry weight is really only a guess.

I had the same problem when I had to go on hemo for 6 months. I was actively trying to lose weight, but they were determined to keep using the same dry weight. More than once I had to stay an extra hour or so as my BP crashed. Sure am glad I'm back on PD again. Hope you get the situation resolved.

Thanks my friends, My husband has to weigh him self before he goes on the machine and tell the nurse what his weight is, she then told him instead of taking off 1.7 she would take off 2.7 because he weighed 1kilo over what he should be. When he explained why, because he had been eating a lot better over the week end, she took no notice. We will see what happens to-morrow at hemo.

Billybags , i expect he is on the same machine as me and if he is the machine will find the fluid if its there , if its not then it just wont reach the expected BVM (which is what happened to me today .
