BURBANK, Calif. (KABC) -- Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank remembered victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The hospital also paid tribute to one of its own doctors.

Dr. Yeneneh Betru was aboard American Airlines Flight 77, when it crashed into the Pentagon.

A native of Ethiopia, Betru was returning to Burbank from Ethiopia, with a stop in Washington, D.C.

He'd made the fateful decision to travel home a day early. Other family members took separate flights home and arrived safely.

Betru's dream to provide kidney dialysis machines to Ethiopia was fulfilled on Sept. 11, 2008 when the Dr. Yeneneh Betru Hemodialysis Center was dedicated in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
