Title: Essences we thought "smelled good"
Post by: okarol on September 12, 2009, 01:04:02 PM
Sense of Smell

These may remind you of essences we thought "smelled good," like …

    * White "library paste." Some idiots would even eat it.
    * LePage's rubber cement.
    * Testor's airplane glue, which held together balsa wood models.
    * Sheets of paper that just came off the mimeograph.
    * The thin oil we put on the tracks of our Lionel trains.
    * The smell of fresh asphalt on the street on a hot day.

...essences we thought "smelled good," like …
    * White "library paste." Some idiots would even eat it... Smell not so much. Taste? Guilty, YUM!!!
    * LePage's rubber cement.
    * Testor's airplane glue, which held together balsa wood models.
    * Sheets of paper that just came off the mimeograph... Oh yes, Breathe deep!
    * The thin oil we put on the tracks of our Lionel trains.
    * The smell of fresh asphalt on the street on a hot day... I love it to this day (this is a part of my
       work). There is one type that smells like grape jelly as it comes out of the truck.

Thanks for the memories okarol!  :clap;

The smell of rain on hot pavement reminds me of summer showers (which were rare in Calif, but memorable experiences) and remind me of being a kid in the San Fernando Valley.

Indeed!  Our farm was very near to one of the best polo player's farm at the time in Jamaica and when the royals (Charles and Phillip, often accompanied by Princess Anne) came to play, our neighbour provided their "mounts".  We'd go to watch the matches and I liked to wander among the grooms and the horses.

Twirl, could you put it in a can so it'll stay fresh en route?   :rofl;

Yeah, I like those smells, but they're not nostalgic smells like most others on this thread. When you smell onions and garlic cooking every day, it smells good, but it's not the kind of thing that reminds me of something and makes me want to stand there and just breathe in.

Last night I caught myself doing that in front of the window fan as it blew in the smell of wet night-time air.

I also like the smell of certain dishwashing liquids in the sink with really hot water running - the hot steam carries up the smell of the soap and, combined with the moisture in the air, it smells good.

Yea, I realized what was going on here after I had posted.  Hmmm, most of that stuff I don't like (tires, etc.).  I do like sawdust, fresh mown grass but don't think it is nostalgia.  I think may the stale beer is from walking the old carnival shows and smelliing the tents we weren't allowed in...  mmm, interesting.  Only other childhood smalle I recal is from the plums tree blooms outside the windows in early spring.  But anybody would like that.

Now do Sounds and I can participate.

My own fart. Provided I stay in the room in which I farted.

I have noticed that if I leave the room and return, the fart smells horrible, like someone else's.
