Title: Anyone had dialysis at Lake Garda in Italy?
Post by: Sugarlump on August 27, 2009, 11:00:01 AM
Hi everyone I'm off for my first holiday abroad on haemodialysis to Italy in ten days time. A bit nervous anbout it all especially as
I don't speak any Italian and I haven't been too well lately either. But I determined to enjoy my holiday.
Has anyone been to the holiday dialysis centre at Arco on Lake Garda? What was it like?

Hi Sugarlump
I had Dialysis in Arco last May. They don't speak much English but they are very proffesional. The only thing to watch out for is the cost of Taxis. I think they were ripping me off as they were charging 18 euros each way and it is only about 2 miles from Riva where I was staying.

Hi Sugarlump
I've only been overseas doing PD but now I'm on Haemo I'm looking all the time for suitable places to go where there is a dialysis centre.

Tell me can you claim the full dialysis costs back from the NHS? Do you have to pay up front and then claim it back or is it all transacted internally by each country's health programmes?

Hi Ken
The NHS sort out all of that for you but only if that specific country accepts the E111.

Hi just to let folks know that the dialysis centre at Arco near Lake Garda was good (all paid for with EHIC card) well-organised but sadly very little english spoken which meant trusting they knew what they were doing!!! Scary for me (I like to be in control). Taxis charged me 11 euros from Riva centre and 14 euros back to the boat jetty (we stayed at Limone). Had a really good holiday, sweated off a lot of fluid in heat so able to drink fairly freely!
Unfortunately, a few days after my return to England I was ill, stomach bug, fever and high blood pressure which I am still unable to shake off and still feeling very poorly. All tests negative. Three weeks on little improvement, no appetite, lost 4 kilos. Whether it is holiday related or not, difficult to tell. I only drank bottled water and was fairly careful what I ate.
Would be interested to know if anyone else has had problems after having a holiday?
