Okay all you folks, what is the difference between CCPD and CAPD. Is it just the cycler machine or what?

Peritoneal dialysis

Removes toxins from the blood by using the peritoneum, the lining that covers the internal organs located in the abdominal region. Usually conducted by the patient, he or she introduces a solution into the peritoneum, through a surgically implanted catheter, allowing this lining to act like a dialyzing membrane. The main problem with this that it must be done every day and usually every 4-6 hours which is called Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) however it can also be done over night while you sleep, that is called Continuous Cycler-Assisted Peritoneal Dialysis (CCPD).

But yeah that is the difference.  :)

CAPD and CCPD attached (pics are great .. Epoman you can use them in the other thread (that is locked) if you so wish) ;)

The first one is CAPD which you see no machine. It is done manually.

The 2nd one is CCPD which you see a machine. For me this was done at night while I slept.

So while I am asking, what are the pros and cons of either way CCPD or CAPD?  Not that I can do either one.  Just want to educate the people out there.  (There is so much information on the board now, sometimes I think we need to address some basics for new people.)  Plus I bet Goofynina has a definite opinion on this one.

Pros and Cons
There are pros and cons to each type of peritoneal dialysis. (http://www.duj.com/RenalDisease.html)

CAPD

Pros

You can perform treatment alone.
You can do it at times you choose.
You can do it in many locations.
You don't need a machine.

Cons

It disrupts your daily schedule.

CCPD

Pros

You can do it at night, mainly while you sleep.

Cons

You need a machine and* help from a partner. (* = I disagree. I mean, I was on CCPD and lived alone and did just fine for 4 yrs!!)

IPD

Pros

Health professionals usually perform treatments.

Cons

You may need to go to a hospital.
It takes a lot of time.
You need a machine.

You are correct Kit and that is why I will be changing the FAQ section to offer just questions like this. I will be moving threads from FAQ to General Discussion and make the FAQ section a section just for questions. It will be a lot of work but it willl be great when it is done.  :thumbup; Stay tuned.

I know you always put a lot of thought into everything you do and you have big plans. I just hope it won't get confusing ;)

Good luck with all the changes!

I think it is a good idea to make the FAQ easy to look through without all the chitchat ;)  :2thumbsup;

That would be great if I could ASSIGN different post to certain members who could make detailed threads about each subject.  :thumbup;

hmmm... well all I know is that in forums you can give different access and titles .. and some aren't for all forum access .. but only for certain groups. But as for on the site itself .. I don't think you can assign anything. But I am sure you will come up with something since you keep surprising us over and over again as it is !!  :2thumbsup; :2thumbsup;
